Fighting drug abuse: 250 cartons of illicit gin intercepted

{Police operations against drug trafficking and abuse in different parts of the country has intercepted 254 cartons of varied contrabands of banned gin in Rwanda, and arrested three people in connection with the act.}

Two of the suspects, both motorcyclists, were apprehended on December 13 in Nyarupfubire, Rwimiyaga Sector in Nyagatare District transporting about 14 cartons of Zebra gin.

Their motorcycles, registration numbers RB 291Y and RB 850K, were also impounded and taken to Rwimiyaga Police Station, where the suspects are also held pending further investigations.

Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, police spokesperson for the Eastern Province warned motorcyclists against aiding criminals and illegal activities.

“Some of these illicit substances are transported by motorcyclists, but they should understand that the law penalizes them as well,” IP Kayigi said.

“Motorcycle cooperatives should as well strengthen partnership with Police to deal with their defiant members, who tarnish the image of their profession,” he added.

In Gakenke District, Muhondo Sector, one Gustave Dusabimana was also arrested with 180 sachets of Sky and 60 sachets of chief waragi.

Meanwhile, police also intercepted Mido Turahirwa, 23, and Yvette Kayiranga 25, with assorted smuggled goods that include 12 bottles of Red Label, 15 pieces of body lotion and eight pieces of a traditional wear called Kitenge.
