FIFA secretary visits Nyamata genocide memorial

{ The acting FIFA Secretary General, Dr Markus Kattner, has visited Nyamata Genocide Memorial where some of the victims of 1994 genocide against the Tutsi are buried. He said the horrific event that happened in Rwanda should be a lesson for the world to live in peace and harmony.}

Dr Markus has been in Rwanda to attend CHAN. He visited Nyamata memorial before leaving the country. He was accompanied by CAF officials; Mr. Zelkifli Ngoufonja, Amira Gaber and FERWAFA president, Vincent Nzamwita De Gaulle.

After getting shocking explanations on the preparation and execution of genocide, Kattner said that Rwanda personifies hope in many ways.

“It is sad to hear tragic events that happened in Nyamata and other parts of the country. Rwanda has shown a good way of overcoming bitter situations. Rwanda should be an example,” he said.

Kattner said that football, as an industry in which he works, has, among its responsibilities, to be a source of unity among people.

The governor of Eastern Province, Madam Uwamariya Odette who welcomed the FIFA secretary said that commitment to visit the memorial before leaving is a symbol of how people have understood what happened in Rwanda.

“The love they have demonstrated coming to visit this memorial is a great symbol that through games, people can love one another and avoid wrong acts as it happened when victims got killed,” she said.

About 45000 victims of 1994 genocide are buried at Nyamata memorial.
CHAN participants have visited genocide memorials including the Morocco team which visited Kigali Genocide Memorial.
