Issa Hayatou, the president of world’s soccer governing body FIFA, will arrive in Rwanda this weekend to preside over the exercise that determines teams for the forthcoming Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
Rwanda Federation of Football Association Officials told KT Press that, Fifa’s interim President, who doubles as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will lead a delegation of 21 officials to witness a televised draw session at Serena Hotel this Sunday, 15.
“Yes, he (Hayatou) will be in Kigali this weekend for CHAN draw exercise,” Olivier Mulindahabi, FERWAFA Secretary General told KT Press.
Rwanda will next year host CHAN competition, strictly competed by local players, from January 16 to February 7.
The country is prepared for the tournament, set to attract 15 qualified teams to join hosts, Rwanda for the final tournament.
Four official stadiums have been upgraded to host the tournament, including Amahoro National stadium and Kigali Regional Stadium in the capital Kigali.
Others include Stade de Huye in Huye district, Southern Province and Stade Umuganda in Rubavu district, Western Province.
According to FERWAFA President, Vincent Nzamwita De Gaulle, “We have been working hard and everything is in order as we head into the drawing ceremony.”
For venues that will host teams and delegations, Nzamwita said, “everything seems to be going into the right direction and we are very optimistic that before the end of this month, all venues will be complete as requested by CAF.”
Representatives from all qualified nations have started arriving in Rwanda as they wait to find out their group opponents during the Sunday event that will be broadcast live across the continent.
It is the first time Hayatou is visiting Rwanda since he was appointed the acting president of FIFA on October 8 this year, replacing suspended FIFA President Sepp Blatter 79, who was this week admitted in hospital after suffering emotional breakdown.
