{{Police in Rwamagana District, yesterday, has arrested 26-year old Azarias Nteziryayo for attempting to dump his baby girl in a pit latrine.}}
Nteziryayo, a resident of Cyanya cell, Kigabiro sector is married to 22-year old Francine Nibagwire. He was caught following a tip-off from neighbors who suspected the ill act that Nteziryayo was trying to commit.
Upon being notified, Police came to the rescue of the baby girl and together with her mother, they were taken to Rwamagana Hospital for treatment while Nteziryayo is held at Kigabiro Police Station for further investigations.
Nteziryayo confessed that he tried getting rid of the innocent baby girl because of poverty which had hit his family and had no means of taking care the newly born child.
Eastern Region police spokesperson, , blamed the act and said that poverty is not a justifiable reason for parents to terminate the life of their own baby as some people normally get bamboozled by such excuses.
He took that opportunity to call for increased neighborhood watch and fast sharing of information between citizens and Police such that such incidents can be addressed on time.
Supt Benoit Nsengiyumva is reminding the citizens that infanticide is a criminal act which is punishable by article 143 of the Rwandan penal code.
Though there is decrease of both infanticide and abortion, it is important to note that Police put strategies to ensure the innocent lives are protected.
Rwanda National Police urge citizens to avail information on any crime to security organs to purposely prevent criminality of any kind and thus create a peaceful and secure country for all Rwandans.
