€ 300,000 to Boost CEPGL Trade

The Economic Community of Great Lakes Countries (CEPGL) has allocated €300,000 to the coordination of regional activities to support women in informal cross-border trade in the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi.

Deputy Executive Secretary in charge of Administration and Finance of CEPGL made the remarks during a workshop held in Gisenyi.

The three-day workshop focuses on informal cross border trade in the region.

€300,000 was released by the Spanish Fund for New Project for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), said the Deputy Executive Secretary in charge of Administration and Finance of the CEPGL, Liliane Gashumba.

“This fund should allow, in a first time, CEPGL perform various activities in cross-border trade,” she said.

These include the construction of a pilot cross-border trade market and the identification of women involved in informal trade at the border.

Liliane Gashumba stressed the need to involve themselves shopping in finding solutions to problems:

“The levels of state intervention in relation to supporting these women are not the same. Us, we would like these women to express themselves, because they are often abused in the exercise of their trade. ”

Rwanda and Burundi gradually normalize the area of border trade.
