{An inmate in Gasabo prison identified as Nkundimana Clement has been shot dead today as he tried to escape. }
The incident happened as the inmate was being taken for a hearing of an appeal at Nyarugenge court of high instance.
It is said that Nkundimana asked permission to go for a short call from where he unfastened the handcuffs, removed clothes and fled.
The prison guard chased after Nkundimana crossing compounds and shot him dead.
Nkundimana was from Kibagabaga cell of Kimironko sector and had been handed a three year sentence for burglary.
The spokesperson of Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) SIP Hillary Sengabo has confirmed to IGIHE that the inmate was shot dead escaping.
“ It is true that he has been shot dead around 10:00 hours. He was appealing the sentence he was handed at Nyarugenge court of high instance. During the hearing, he asked permission to go to the toilet from where he unfastened handcuffs because we have learnt that he had their keys, removed clothes and got out running. The prison guard chased after him , failing to reach the inmate he shot him dead,” he said.
Sengabo explained that when an inmate is going in private places, the prison guard loosens the handcuff in one arm which has helped Ndikumana to unfasten it because he had the key.
He explained that Nkundimana was also found with a mobile phone which is suspected to have been used in the escape conspiracy along with his family members.
Last year, another inmate in Huye prison, a one Nakabeza was shot dead at Ngoma court of low instance as he fought with the prison guard trying to escape.
