{The youth members of the Islamic community from Gatsibo and Kayonza districts have been urged to be part of crime prevention mechanisms to further ensure public safety. }
The call was made recently in two separate meetings that brought together about 600 Islamic youth from both districts.
At Kiramuruzi Mosque in Gatsibo, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Baptiste Bucyangenda reminded the youth that as the world evolve, so are the crimes.
“That’s why everyone needs to be relevant when it comes to crime prevention. Your role as the youth in this drive is paramount,” IP Bucyangenda said.
“Security plays a major role in Rwanda’s development agenda that’s why we must preserve it… always keep in mind that you are the future of this country, you have all the means to continue shaping it the right way by focusing in your studies and development activities, and fighting crimes like drug abuse, theft, human trafficking and corruption. Your country believes in you.”
He noted that one of the key ways in crime prevention is information sharing where he challenged them to always provide timely information on anyone or anything suspicious.
In Kayonza, the DCLO, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Jean Pierre Bimenyimana told the Islamic youth that gathered at Mukarange youth center that; “sustainable security and development requires everyone’s efforts, including faith-based organizations.”
AIP Bimenyimana urged them to be an eye for their neighbours in their respective societies and share timely information on any criminal or unlawful act.
He noted that some people have either interpreted Islam wrongly or hide behind it to conduct criminal activities like terrorism across the globe and urged them to keep in the right path by campaigning against radicalization.
The Imam of the Eastern Province, Sheikh Jumayine Kamanzi said that Islam is mandated to nurture a focused community and that that’s why acts like radicalization and extremism can’t be tolerated.
“We must redouble our efforts and further ensure safety of our nation for every Rwandan, that is why we should be characterized by the spirit of patriotism and be part of community policing and development initiatives,” said Sheikh Kamanzi.
