East African legislature gets new Speaker

{Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) have elected Dan Fred Kidega as their new speaker.This follows the impeachment of former Speaker Margaret Ziwa over misconduct and abuse of office.}

During Friday’s vote Kidega went through unopposed after his only contender for the position, another Ugandan Chris Opoka withdrew from the contest.

Kidega is to steer the Assembly until 2017.

Founded in 2011, the 45-member EALA is the legislative arm of the East African Community which is made up of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.
