Drivers to Be Penalised For Transporting Illegal Luggage

{{The Rwanda National Police has warned drivers of public vehicles and heavy trucks against conniving and aiding drug traffickers and smugglers.}}

The warning follows the Saturday incident in Burera district where a Toyota Pick-up Hilux registration number RAA 255Y was intercepted carrying 387 cartons of an illicit gin called Blue Sky.

The vehicle was intercepted in Kayenzi cell, Kogogo sector on August 16, with the owner of the illegal gin identified as Ernestine Uwamariya, 28, on board.

Both the Uwamariya and the driver also identified as Faustin Nshimiyimana were arrested and currently detained at Gahunga Police Station.

It is alleged that Uwamariya had paid Nshimiyimana Rwf20, 000 to transport the illegal goods to Musanze from an illegal border in Burera.

Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, Police spokesperson for the Northern region noted that some drivers especially of four-seater and public vehicles have had a hand in this illegal trade and warned of severe action to anyone that will be caught in such acts.

“In this campaign against drug abuse and even smuggling, we know that there are drivers involved and like dealers, they also share the blame and also face penalties under Rwandan laws as accomplices for intentionally aiding trade of dangerous goods,” Hitayezu noted.

He also appealed to drivers to always know the baggage they transport to avoid falling prey of traffickers or dealers and report those they suspect of being involved in these illegal acts.
