According to the verdict, Kizima was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity.

He was convicted on six counts: murder, rape, torture, looting, arson and extortion that the court had against him.

Most of the abuses were committed between late 2009 and early 2012 in Shabunda.

The sentence came while the Congolese army has for the last week an offensive against FDLR in North Kivu and South Kivu, where 1,400 Rwandan Hutu fighters are still active, according to the United Nations.

Lambert Mende, spokesman of the government said Monday that 43 FDLR were captured. The UN Mission in the DRC remained away from ongoing operations.
