Following complaints of Water scarcity in Eastern Province each District in the Province has allocated 35% of the annual budget to fix the water problem.
Activities are expected to complete by June, 2013.
Water scarcity problem was earlier reported in the Districts of Gatsibo and Kirehe.
In Gatibo alone, 76% of residents do not have access to clean water.
The Governor of the Province Uwamariya Odeth confirmed the new decision.
Uwamariya revealed that all 2000 households in Gatsibo and Kirehe that were to be supplied with Water and Electricity were served.
She added that the number of beneficiaries is expected to increase.
According to statistics, water supply in Gatsibo has increased from 26% to 49%.
The Province is targeting that by end of 2013 water and Electricity will reach about 70% of the total population.
By 2015 on Districts level, water supply in districts of the province will be as: Nyagatare 85% of population will have access to clean water, Gatsibo 83.9%, Kayonza 84%, Kirehe 80%, Rwamagana 86% Ngoma 85% while Bugesera will have 70.6%.
The Deputy Director General in charge of water in EWSA, Sano James pledged that EWSA will work closely with the Districts to successfully achieve that target.
