Disaster Management Minister warns Public Over disasters

{The Minister for Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs, Séraphine Mukantabana has called upon the general population to identify and take precautions against anything that can lead to disasters.}

She made the call on November 5 while presiding over the official launch of the week-long countrywide awareness campaign dedicated to minimising and fighting disaster risks, held in Remera, Gasabo district.

The Minister outlined landslides, fire outbreaks and floods as major disasters registered in the country.

“These are avoidable disasters and preventing them is key to sustainable development,” she said.

Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Butera, commissioner for Operations in Rwanda National Police (RNP), appealed to families still residing in ares demarcated as high risk zones such as wetlands, risky hills, to relocate to safer zones which he said is an immediate preventive measure.

He also appealed to the population to avoid using old or substandard electrical cables and switch off domestic appliances to avoid fire outbreaks.

In case of any disaster, he said, the public should rush to call the RNP fire and rescue unit on 111 (toll-free), 0788311224 and 0788311120 for quick intervention.

During the event, Police also demonstrated to revellers how they can put out fire using various equipment like fire extinguishers and demonstrated how they rescue people trapped in buildings, using its rescue vehicles.
