Cross border business women call for peace in Burundi

Women practicing medium scale cross border trade from Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi have called on Burundi leaders to restore peace inside the country to guarantee security in the Great Lakes Region.

The 60 women who come together under the association Commercante Solidaire pour la Paix dans les grand Lacs (COSOPAX) sent an appeal letter to Burundi leaders to restore peace inside the country.

Mukarugeruza Rosette, representing COSOPAX in Rwanda said “At the beginning of insurgencies in Burundi, all women from the four catholic dioceses of Cyangugu, Bukavu, Kamanyora and Bujumbura , came together and wrote a letter requesting Burundi leaders to maintain dialogue and peace process other than confrontation.”

The COSOPAX Burundi representative, Munezero Elina said that their association tries its best to avoid violence. “You already know the matter of insecurity in Burundi. We request Congolese and Rwandans to keep bringing merchandises in Burundi to promote our trade,” she said.

Justine Kiringwi from Kamanyora town of DRC says that politicians should mind the people they lead and work towards promoting their welfare instead of politicking and bickering all the time.
