Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Gasabo, Burera and Gatsibo districts have be urged to go beyond reporting crimes to crime prevention by identifying their causes. The call was made in separate meetings held on May 24.
In Gasabo, SP Augustin Rurangirwa, while speaking to over 200 members of CPCs, he rallied them to play a lead role in identifying the root causes of the common crimes like gender based violence and trafficking in drugs.
This, he said, will help to deal with the root causes while breaking the supply chain of drugs.
“Effects of drug abuse go beyond just the consumer to the family and the community at large. Majority of the crimes we record are linked to drug abuse and by identifying and arresting suppliers we will be dealing with the issue from the bottom of it,” said Supt. Rurangirwa.
Speaking on the raising issue of human trafficking, SP Rurangirwa said: “Although figures indicate that this crime is rare, we cannot afford to turn a blind eye. The goal is to inform the public about the crime and ensure this kind of abuse doesn’t take shape in our societies; but we can only achieve that through cooperation with you and the general public.”
“We don’t want to deal with consequences of human trafficking; we want to make Rwanda an impossible place to conduct such an illegal and dehumanizing trade in human being.”
In Burera, the Executive Secretary of Cyeru Sector Blaise Sebagabo accompanied by District Liaison officer(DCLO) emphasized similar messages and pointed out that the best way to counter crimes is through information sharing with security organs at all levels.
In Gatsibo district the same message was echoed by IP Joseph Musonera ,officer in Charge(OC) of Rwimbogo Police station where members of CPCs were also reminded to be catalysts in community awareness against crimes.
