Members of the community night patrol in Masaka Sector of Kicukiro District have foiled a burglary attempt in Gako Cell where two suspected thieves were attempting to break into one of the shops in Bamporeze Village deep in the night.
The two men identified as Camarade Niyigena, 30, and Faustin Kubwimana, 29, were apprehended red-handed on Wednesday at about 1:40 as they were drilling a hole into the shop, Police in Kicukiro said.
“Members of night patrol in Bamporeze Village trailed the two men, who were moving in the middle of the night with an iron bar, to their destination and apprehended them red-handed while drilling a hole in a wall to force their way inside the shop,” said Supt. Richard Iyamuremye, Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali.
The night patrol called police, which has since taken over the case as suspects are currently detained at Masaka Police station.
“This is one of the tremendous achievements of community policing and night patrols in particular in crime detection and prevention,” he added.
He noted that although cases of house break-in are on downward trend, they still exist in communities and in some trading centres, which requires strengthened night patrols, neighbourhood watch and strong cooperation between the public, local leaders and Police to fight, detect, prevent crimes and arrest suspects
However, Police says it finds challenges in identifying owners of the recovered equipment since some are not marked and those claiming ownership neither posses any document that supports their claims.
This calls for each and everybody to know the importance of police campaigns that advise, target hardening, property Marking and neighbourhood watch, to ensure joint protection of own homes and property in particular against intruders and likely offenders.
The recovered electronics are stored at Kigali Metropolitan Police Headquarters in Remera where victims can go and identify their gadgets, but are required to be accompanied by supporting documents, police said.
