{Rwanda National Police has taken its child rights campaign to students in Ngororero District urging them to champion the protection of the rights of children.}
In a meeting held on February 24, the District Community Liaison Officer of Ngororero, Inspector of Police (IP) Alexandre Minani, told about 1690 students of Groupe Scolaire de Hindiro to actively take part in fighting and prevention of child abuse and protect children’s all rights.
He mentioned physical and psychological violence, sexual harassment as well as child labour as among other challenges children face, which should be reported.
He pointed out that children rights as enshrined in the international, regional and national policies and laws, must be protected at all times citing the right to education, health, play and medical care, among others.
“Remember you have the right to express yourselves on matters affecting you. If we collectively abide by the child protection mechanism, we will be building a safer future generation,” said IP Minani.
Students promised to extend the knowledge they acquired beyond their school to their communities.
The awareness comes at a time when government launched a nation-wide campaign on February 24, with an aim of drawing and implementing conclusive strategies to safeguard rights of children and
improve their welfare generally.
The campaign is being implemented jointly by the ministries of Justice, Internal Security,Gender and Family Promotion and Local Government.
It seeks to protect children, promote their rights and increase their participation in the development of their country.
During the launch of the campaign, RNP was recognized as one of the key partners that have actively participated in the protection of children rights.
