    Ghanaian Gospel Musician Rev Kusi Berko Dies

    {{Ghanaian gospel musician Barima Kusi Brimpong, popularly known as Rev. Kusi Berko, has died.}}

    The musician, according to reports died in Pramso, near Kumasi Friday.

    Rev. Kusi Berko, known for several hit songs including ‘Edin Ben Ni’ and ‘Ofata/Nyame Aguama’, had been battling stroke for the past six years.

    In 2012, organisers of the Ghana Gospel Music Awards reportedly donated an amount of GHc5,000 to cater for the musician’s medical bills and well-being.

    He made a surprise public appearance at the Perez Chapel in December 2013 to thank God for being the sole person keeping him alive in his difficult condition.

    Rev. Kusi Berko is quoted to have said: “I have a resilient faith in God. For six good years, I was bed-ridden as a result of stroke. I could not walk but I told God that I will not die but live to testify his good works. Today, here I am, proclaiming the work of God.”

    Shortly after his death, renowned UK-based Ghanaian musician Sonnie Badu tweets: “Just heard we lost #Evangelist #KusiBerko the voice and writer behind #ofata and many gospel hits…”

    “Had the privilege to surprise him on his thanks giving day… You will forever be remembered !! #wako #Okopa,” he added.

    Justin Bieber Repeatedly Humiliated by Leonardo DiCaprio

    {{The Ibiza restaurant scuffle between elfin warrior Orlando Bloom and goblin royalty Justin Bieber was initially intriguing for how A-list it all sounded. }}

    Early reports had other big celebrities like P. Diddy and Leonardo DiCaprio not only in attendance but actually APPLAUDING Bloom’s efforts to rearrange Bieber’s face.

    Now a woman who was there, 20-year-old Spanish model Anastasia Skolkova, tells The Mirror that Orlando Bloom’s dinner companion Leonardo DiCaprio may have helped incite the incident by openly humiliating Bieber in front of everybody:

    Bieber said something to DiCaprio – I don’t know exactly what, because it was seven or eight metres away. Leo brushed his hands at him, like, I don’t care what you say. Yeah, he flicked him away.

    At that point, obviously, an injury-free scuffle ensued when Orlando Bloom jumped over a booth and gave chase.

    But The Mirror points out that DiCaprio’s curt dismissal of Bieber’s existence was only the latest in a series of such slights.

    For example at the most recent Cannes festival, Bieber was partying shirtless in a nightclub and sent his people over to where DiCaprio was sitting in order to see if he wanted to “party” with Bieber.

    Justin was nodding and smiling in Leo’s direction, but Leo just shook his head no and waved him off. He thinks Justin’s a little twit.

    Kenyan Woman Kills Mother-in-Law Over Porriage

    {{A disagreement over a cup of porridge on Tuesday claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman in Maarani district, Kisii County.}}

    Witnesses told local media that the assailant, Ms Truphena Kwamboka, 25, hacked her mother-in-law, Clemencia Kwamboka, to death with a sharp panga in a bizarre incident that has left residents in shock.

    The two are said to have returned home after a long day in the farm and found a cup of porridge in their kitchen.

    Witnesses said Ms Truphena suggested that the cup of porridge be given to her child, but her mother-in-law disagreed, arguing that her child deserved it more.

    An argument ensued, but the older Kwamboka carried the day and her child drank the porridge.

    According to Mr Tom Mogaka, a son of the deceased, the move infuriated Ms Truphena, who insisted that her child should have been given the porridge because she was younger.

    {{‘Petty Argument’}}

    “The two, who were living in the same house, had never had a serious argument before. They were in fact good friends and it is surprising that this had to happen,” said Mr Mogaka.

    He explained that Ms Truphena waited for nightfall, when everyone had retired, to unleash her fury, hacking the old woman, who was deep in slumber.

    “We have never seen anything like this in this area before. It is strange and quite sad and we are wondering what possessed her to go attacking my mother like that,” said Mr Mogaka.

    “It was such a petty argument and we thought she had settled down when her child did not get the porridge. but it appears she had other plans.”

    “We are hoping that justice will be served and our mother will rest in peace.” He added.

    Maarani Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Benjamin Kimwere told the Daily Nation that investigations had been launched.

    {{Lynching Averted}}

    “It is very surprising that two people who have been living together peacefully could end up in such a quarrel,” said Mr Kimwere.

    “We have tried to establish if they had any underlying issues, but nothing is forthcoming so far.”

    Mr Kimwere said his officers acted fast and prevented neighbours from lynching the assailant.

    “We had to act very quickly when we received the report, since we were aware that the residents could have taken matters into their own hands,” Mr Kimwere said.

    The woman was arrested and was in custody awaiting charges.

    The OCPD also warned members of the public to desist from situations that might cause them harm following an alarming rise in the number of murder cases and conflicts in the area.

    “People here should observe peace and avoid involving themselves in unnecessary conflict. We are also trying to establish why there are so many cases of violence.

    YouTube Star Michelle Sued Over Copyright Breach

    {{A leading YouTube entrepreneur is facing legal action for alleged copyright infringement in her videos.}}

    Ultra Records, which has musicians Kaskade, deadmau5 and Calvin Harris on its books, is suing Michelle Phan.

    The label and its publishing arm claim she has used about 50 of their songs without permission in her YouTube videos and on her own website.

    But one of the artists whose work she is alleged to have used has said he supports Ms Phan.

    Kaskade, whose work features most prominently in the record label’s complaint, said: “Copyright law is a dinosaur, ill-suited for the landscape of today’s media.”

    He expressed his disbelief on Twitter that his own record label was suing Ms Phan for copyright infringement. “And the kicker… they’re citing her using my songs for the suit. Come. On,” he wrote on the site.

    But Kaskade, who was nominated for a Grammy award last year, said there was little he could do to stop the label pursuing the case.

    In response, Ms Phan thanked him and wrote: “Your music inspired not just myself, but millions of my followers to dance and dream on.”

  • Amb. Nkulikiyinka Speaks Out On ‘We Are Rwanda’ Book

    Amb. Nkulikiyinka Speaks Out On ‘We Are Rwanda’ Book

    {{At the launch of the new book titled ‘We are Rwanda’, H.E. Christine Nkulikiyinka, Rwanda’s envoy to Germany reviewed the book. Below are excerpts of the complete interview by Martin Brandes.}}

    Martin Brandes: {Madam Ambassador, you have just published a book, entitled „We are Rwanda“ and released it during the celebrations of Liberation Day here in Berlin. How did you come up with the idea to publish such a book? }

    {{H.E. Christine Nkulikiyinka}},. You may be aware of the fact that it is often others who speak or write about Rwanda. Yet, among those there are many who judge the people and the country without taking into account what we Rwandans really think or feel. In order to give Rwandans themselves a voice and to leave this rather passive role of being talked about I have published a book in which Rwandans speak for themselves.

    At the same time I wanted to shed some light on contemporary Rwandan-German relations. In the book, German investors, for example, provide an account of their very own experience of today’s Rwanda. We also speak about our partnership with Rhineland-Palatine.

    Also, I was keen to show our country’s bright side, to show the route of successful development our country has taken over the past years. The book’s aim is also to counter the prognosis that Rwanda’s future would not be a positive one.

    M.B.{{ The book’s title “We are Rwanda” suggest that Rwandans themselves narrate the book? }}

    C.N. Indeed, most of the stories presented are narrated by Rwandans themselves. They let the reader know about themselves and about their view on Rwanda. They tell how they live there, what they think, how they feel, what drives them, what dreams they have for their futures – all contributions are very personal accounts.

    Those providing their stories, of course, only represent a small sample of our population. Yet, these people are from a broad range of professions and backgrounds and represent many others at the same time. The sum of the stories they tell reflects the lives of a big chunk of our population.

    M.B. {{Madam Ambassador, you already have a job which is quite time-consuming. How did you manage to publish a book “on the side”? }}

    {{C.N}}. This is true. My job can be quite challenging at times; yet, I also enjoy representing Rwanda a lot. This is why it was a great pleasure for me to also dedicate my free time to implement this important project.

    Yet, I would not have been able to succeed all by myself. With Andrea Jeska I had an experienced author by my side. She already published a number of books and was awarded prices for her excellent work as a journalist.

    Tom Baerwald, a renowned photographer, added another dimension to the project. His professional photos enrich the book so much. Both Tom and Andrea have found the right access to our country and its people.

    They have built trust to those they portrayed so that the portrayed people could open up, share their feelings and personal accounts of past actualities with them.

    It was a matter of luck that Andrea had the time for the project and that she was willing to work under much time pressure. Both Tom and Andrea were a unique support to me.

    M.B. {{You mention time pressure? How much time did the production of the book take? }}

    {{C.N.}} Together with Andrea I had discussed the idea of creating a positive book about Rwanda several years ago. Yet, we did not follow up on this idea back then. With the 20th Liberation Day approaching I saw the opportunity had come to speak out about Rwanda ourselves.

    We fixed the idea in September 2013. Yet, I had to find sponsors for the book’s financial support first. In the end we produced the book at a record speed of only seven months.

    M.B. {{Madame Ambassador, what would you like to achieve with this book? }}

    {{C.N.}} There are several issues I would like to tackle with this book. For one, I would like to give a voice to the various different people in Rwanda and I hope to contribute to improving the understanding of Rwandans and Rwanda among outsiders in Germany but also in other countries.

    Also, I would like to start a discussion on taking into account the inhabitants’ thoughts and perspective when engaging with another country, like Rwanda, as an outsider. The book is also meant to contribute to correct the mostly negative media image of Rwanda and Africa in general and to show the everyday life beyond the big headlines of crises.

    M.B. {{Now the book has been published in German. Is it targeted at German audiences only? }}

    {{C.N}}. Not only. As the Ambassador to Berlin I would, of course, like to reach the German audience in the first place. Yet, we would like to translate the book into English, too, so that people in Rwanda and elsewhere can read it as well. By now, however, the financing of an English edition is not yet certain.

    M.B. {{During the Berlin reception on the occasion of Liberation Day a photo exhibition by Tom Baerwald was presented, too. What is the idea behind this?}}

    {{C.N}}. The exhibition is the project’s second part. Tom was travelling Rwanda for more than two months, partly together with Andrea. He has got to know those portrayed so that they allowed him to take their pictures. He also took photos of the landscape which are part of the exhibition, too.

    Currently only a small part of the exhibition is presented in different places in Berlin. The idea is to have this exhibition tour throughout Germany so that as many people as possible can get to know Rwandans and Rwanda better.

    The large entire exhibition is foreseen to be shown for the first time in Munich. We hope to be able to bring it to Rwanda afterwards.

    M.B. {{Are there any other remarks you would like to add on the issue?}}

    {{C.N}}. Thank you. Yes, I would like to thank a number of people. I would like to thank Andrea and Tom. My gratitude goes to the generous sponsors, here to Dr. Charles Mamisch in particular, who helped to make the project become reality in the end.

    Also I would like to thank my family, who – for quite some time – had to spend evenings and weekends without me.

    If you are interested to get the book, please feel free to contact the Embassy.
    Last, I would like to wish our readers an enriching and interesting read!

    {Google theme was changed to depict Mandela Day}

    {{South Africans are marking the first Mandela Day since the anti-apartheid icon’s death with a government call to clean up their country.}}

    Events are also being held around the world, with people urged to spend 67 minutes helping others, to mark Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of public service.

    Friday 18 July would have been his 96th birthday.

    Mr Mandela, who died last December, was revered around the world for fighting white-minority rule in South Africa.

    He spent 27 years in prison, before becoming the country’s first black president in 1994.

    On Thursday, an auction of memorabilia he signed was auctioned for charity, raising about $160,000 (£93,000) for charity – less than anticipated.

    President Jacob Zuma has urged people to take brooms and mops and take part in “Operation Clean-Up for Madiba” campaign, using Mr Mandela’s clan name.

    However, some tax-payers have complained that should be the government’s job, reporters said.

    Other people volunteered to help in homes for the elderly and orphanages, or made blankets to give to help homeless people in the southern hemisphere’s winter.

    While Google has an elaborate Mandela-themed design on its home page, using some of his quotes.

    Romanian Princess Admits Running Gambling Ring

    {{A Romanian princess and her husband pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one charge of running an illegal gambling operation for their involvement in a cockfighting ring in rural Oregon. }}

    Irina Walker, 61, daughter of exiled former Romanian King Michael, and her husband John Walker, 68, appeared in federal court in Portland in connection with cockfights they held in Irrigon, Oregon, in 2012 and 2013.

    They had originally denied any wrongdoing, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Peifer said that, under the agreement to change their plea, the couple will sell their ranch and forfeit $200,000 (£116,695) to the government in lieu of incarceration.

    Cockfighting is illegal under federal law, and under the laws of every state.

    The Walkers were originally charged with 12 counts including operating an illegal gaming business, conspiracy and violating the Animal Welfare Act.

    Each count had carried a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

    They initially held the contests outside at their ranch but later built a barn-like structure “used as an arena,” Peifer told the court. He said they rented portable toilets, hired someone to cook Mexican food, and also sold alcoholic drinks.

    Ghana Police Search for Body of Afrobeats Artist Castro

    Police in Ghana are searching for the body of Afrobeats artist Castro following a suspected boating accident.

    He was reportedly with a female friend on Sunday when the incident is thought to have taken place. Their sea scooter has been recovered by police.

    Friends have taken to social media to pay tribute to Castro, whose real name is Theophilus Tagoe, despite his death not being officially confirmed.

    Tributes have been tweeted by Lethal Bizzle, Sway and Tinchy Stryder.

    Castro is currently number one in DJ Edu’s 1Xtra Destination Africa chart with his remix of Sarkodie’s Adonai.

    Lethal Bizzle wrote: “My favourite Ghanaian artist :(. #RIPCastro”.

    Tinchy Styder tweeted: “My thoughts go out to Castro, his friends & family! Words can’t even explain the shock I got when I heard the news! You’re with the angels!”

    His manager DJ Amess said that Castro had only returned to Ghana on Thursday and was celebrating with his friends, including footballer Asamoah Gyan.

    He said Castro was joined by a woman but said it was not his girlfriend.

    “She jumped into the boat to cruise with Castro,” he said. “Castro refused her but the girl said that she would go.

    “When they took off, the bystanders were calling for them to return so that the girl would put on her life jacket. Castro was already wearing his.”

    He said they did not hear calls from people who were standing watching him on a bank in Ada.

    Witnesses told him they saw Castro take off his life jacket to try to save the woman after she jumped into the water.

    “After they were a few miles away, they saw the girl jump from the boat into the river,” he said. “Maybe she was afraid.

    “I wasn’t there so I can’t confirm it but somebody told me this. Then Castro followed suit. He thought he could have saved the girl.

    “He was wearing the life jacket so the moment he fell into the water he was not able to save the girl.

    “They told me they saw him removing the jacket. I wasn’t there so I can’t confirm whether it’s true or not.”

    He also said he had spoken to Castro’s parents.

    “It’s a disaster for the family,” he said.
