  • Virtuosic Polymath Somi Kakoma debuts as first Rwandan actor to appear on Broadway

In New York City, Grammy-nominated singer, composer, playwright, and now actor Somi Kakoma (known in the jazz world simply as “Somi”) has just become the first Rwandan actor to debut on Broadway. Somi is currently starring as the title character of “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” – a new play by Ghanaian-American playwright Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Obie-award winner Whitney White.

This dazzling world premiere welcomes you into a bustling hair braiding salon in Harlem, New York City where a lively and eclectic group of West African immigrant hair braiders are creating masterpieces on the heads of neighborhood women.

The uncertainty of their circumstances simmers below the surface of their lives and when it boils over, it forces a tight-knit community to confront what it means to be an outsider on the edge of the place they call home.

Other actors in the production include the likes of Dominique Thorne (Wakanda Forever) and Nana Mensah (The Chair), who are also making their Broadway debuts.

Commenting on the milestone, Somi underscored that it has truly been a gift to share the stories of African women on the Broadway stage – especially a story ‘that not only disarms audiences with so much humor but also lifts up the experience of African immigrants living in the United States’.

“As a daughter of immigrants from Rwanda and Uganda, I am fully aware of what it means to define ‘home’ in multiple places. I am also aware of the often obscured challenges that Black immigrants in particular face under American immigration policies. More than anything, I hope this show invites people to think about our shared humanity and the ways in which we might find home in each other,” she said.

Broadway is located in the center of Manhattan in New York City and is known as the global pinnacle of theatrical artistry. Housed in 41 theaters in the famed Theatre District of Times Square, it features some of the most talented performers – often launching many careers to Hollywood stardom.

On opening night of ‘Jaja’s African Hair Braiding’, Somi took to social media to simply state that it was “a dream come true.” The play has been extended twice with non-stop rave reviews. Currently running at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, final performances of “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” are being globally live streamed this weekend, November 18-19. Live and virtual tickets are available at jajabroadway.com

Also known as the first African woman to ever receive a Grammy nomination in any of the jazz categories, Somi became the first Rwandan ever nominated for a Grammy with her nod for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2021. Even though this play is not a musical, her music fans will be happy to know that Somi is currently working on her next album for a 2024 release.

  • From rejection to resilience: Gabrielle Union’s inspiring story

Netflix’s Strong Black Lead, an initiative dedicated to celebrating Black voices in the entertainment industry, had a heartfelt interview with Gabrielle. In it, she recounted a personal and pivotal moment from her career when she faced rejection for a role, not because of her talent or experience but because someone deemed her “less pretty” than her competitor.

    The Unveiling of Vulnerability

Gabrielle’s revelation came as a surprise to many. Here was a Hollywood icon, known for her talent and beauty, sharing a deeply personal experience that shook her to her core. She chose not to reveal the specifics of the project or the name of the actor she lost the role to, but instead, she chose to focus on the invaluable lesson she learned from the painful incident.

In her own words, Gabrielle described the experience as follows: “Years ago, I was up for a big job, and after numerous callbacks, and studio tests, it was down to just the two of us. I was told I didn’t get the part because, ‘She’s just prettier than you.’ For someone who had low self-esteem, it just felt like there was no place for me, for my kind of Blackness.”

    A Lesson in Self-Value

Gabrielle’s experience is not unique in the world of entertainment. The harsh realities of industry standards and expectations can sometimes overshadow the talent and dedication of actors, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Her story serves as a profound reminder that talent and worth should never be determined by outward appearances.

This heartbreaking incident took a toll on her confidence, making her equate her physical beauty with her ability to perform her job. Gabrielle’s candidness in sharing this moment of vulnerability is a testament to her strength and the resilience that has made her the celebrated figure she is today.

    Navigating the Road to Self-Respect

The important lesson Gabrielle derived from this ordeal is a beacon of inspiration for anyone, not just those in the entertainment industry. Gabrielle wisely stated, “I recognize that if I had gotten that job and I was around people like that, my soul would be worn down. I only want to be in spaces where I’m wanted.”

Her experience underscores the importance of recognizing your true value and worth. It’s a message that resonates far beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. When faced with situations where your worth is diminished, it is vital to have the courage to walk away. Gabrielle’s journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of self-respect in one’s life and career.

    Closing Thoughts

Gabrielle Union’s interview with Netflix’s Strong Black Lead has offered a deeply personal glimpse into the challenges she faced on her path to success. Her revelation, though painful, carries with it an invaluable lesson for everyone. We should never allow anyone to diminish our value or ask us to accept less than we deserve.

As we celebrate Gabrielle Union’s 51st birthday, we also celebrate her strength, resilience, and her unwavering commitment to self-worth. Her journey from a moment of rejection to the heights of success is a testament to her determination and her unshakable belief in her abilities.

In a world that often tries to define us by superficial standards, Gabrielle’s story reminds us that true beauty and value come from within, and that we should always be in spaces where we are truly wanted, valued, and respected.

  • Sophie Turner files lawsuit against Joe Jonas, alleging unlawful custody of their children

In the lawsuit, Turner alleges that Jonas has committed the grievous act of refusing to return their children to their homeland, England, amidst their divorce proceedings. The couple shares a 3-year-old daughter named Willa, and their second daughter, born in July 2022, remains unnamed to the public being mentioned as D in the documents.

According to media reports, this tumultuous situation unfolded following a meeting between the estranged couple, which was intended to discuss the terms of their separation. Turner claims that the children were supposed to be returned to her care on a specific date, but Jonas has allegedly withheld their passports and adamantly refused to send them back to England.

Jonas, on the other hand, disputes these allegations and asserts that a Florida court has issued an order preventing either parent from relocating their children. He cites this legal order as his reason for not complying with Turner’s request to allow the children to return to England.

The tangled web of their divorce proceedings began when Jonas initiated the process by filing for divorce in Miami-Dade County court on September 5. In his filing, he sought “shared parental responsibilities” for their two daughters, as well as the enforcement of their prenuptial agreement, which was established in April 2019.

Interestingly, Turner claims that she first learned about Jonas’ divorce filing through the media, while Jonas’ representatives maintain that she was aware of his intentions. A crucial point of contention centers on where the children have been residing. Jonas insists they have been living with him in various locations throughout the United States, including Miami, a claim Turner vehemently disputes.

Turner’s lawsuit paints a different picture, alleging that the children have been residing in England since April 10, 2023. According to her filing, she and Jonas had made the decision to make England their “forever home” during discussions in December 2022. This decision prompted them to sell their mansion in Miami and search for new residences in the idyllic English countryside.

Furthermore, Turner’s work commitments, including filming a new drama series, influenced their choice to settle in England.

As Jonas embarked on a world tour with the Jonas Brothers recently, it was agreed that their daughters, Willa and her younger sibling, would stay with him. This decision was influenced by Jonas having more daytime availability to care for the children, given Turner’s demanding filming schedule. However, Turner expressed some hesitation over this temporary arrangement.

The divorce proceedings took a sudden and unexpected turn on August 15, leading to their four-year marriage coming to an abrupt end. Shockingly, Turner claims that she first learned of Jonas’ divorce filing from the media on September 1, further adding to the complexity of their dispute.

In a dramatic legal twist, Turner’s recent petition was filed under The Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and the International Child Abduction Remedies Act.

These legal frameworks address situations where children are internationally abducted from one parent. Additionally, Turner has indicated her intention to file a case in England, citing Jonas’ custody arrangement as a breach of her rights under English law.

Jonas’ representatives, however, contest these claims, denouncing the use of the term “abduction.” They argue that the children were not abducted and have been in Joe’s care by mutual agreement for the past three months. They suggest that Sophie’s legal actions are aimed at shifting the divorce proceedings to the UK and permanently removing the children from the U.S.

As the legal battle unfolds, the public watches with bated breath, hoping for an amicable resolution that prioritizes the well-being of the children caught in the middle of this tumultuous divorce.
