Car breaker arrested red-handed, Rwf3.8 million recovered

Police in Nyarugenge District are holding a man for his role in car breaking-inns targeting money and electronics like computers, mobile phones and car radios.

Albert Hitimana was arrested red-handed on May 10 in Kiyovu after breaking into one of the vehicles, where he allegedly stole Rwf3.8 million.

Hitimana is said to be known for his involvement in similar criminal activities on several occasion, according to police.

Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that the suspect was apprehended by the people, who were nearby after spotting him breaking into the vehicle.

“The victim is a businessman; so when he parked the car, Hitimana broke into it but before he could get out, people who were nearby saw him and immediately intervened and locked him in the car until the owner and police arrived and handled the situation,” Supt. Hitayezu said.

“The suspect had already picked bundles of money which were in the car amounting to Rwf3.8 million, which was recovered from him,” he added.

Meanwhile, the victim has since claimed that he had Rwf8.8 million in the car,and since then investigations have started to establish the truth.

Hitimana, however, claimed that the owner had left the vehicle unlocked, which made it easy for him to open it which does exonerate from the criminal liability.

It is, however, said that thieves have a trick of leaning against the targeted vehicle, holds one of the handles and when the driver locks, one of the door remains unlocked in such cases care must be taken if car owners suspect individuals, they should inform police for immediate intervention.
