Cabinet has expressed sympathy to families who lost their members, those who sustained injuries and those whose houses were destroyed due to the recent downpour in all parts of the country.
This was during a Cabinet meeing on April 24, Chaired by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro.
Last week Rwanda’s Minister of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs Seraphine Mukantabana announced that within four months, heavy rains had claimed lives of 37 and caused extensive damages.
“There were also 45 injured, 1,615 houses destroyed, ” she said adding that 668 hectares of rice, maize, beans and bananas were destroyed.
Eleven power poles fell, 13 classrooms and six churches destroyed, 123 toilets have also been destroyed and many damaged, including bridges.
The Cabinet meeting thanked all people who participated in the rescue operations and took the opportunity to request all the institutions to continue to sensitise the population on measures to prevent disaster including especially erosion control; reforestation wherever possible and rain water harvesting.
