Cabinet calls for referendum

{The extraordinary cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister, Anastase Murekezi in ‘village Urugwiro’ has appealed on president Kagame to hold a nationwide referendum of amended 2015 Rwandan constitution as the law requires, a day after that the parliamentary chamber of deputies handed over the revised constitution.}

The cabinet has analyzed the request letter of 24th November 2015, the president of deputies chamber sent to the office of the Prime Minister asking for legal procedures to adopt a nationwide referendum of Rwandan constitution as amended in 2015.

The cabinet meeting has also considered articles 109 and 193 of the constitution of 2003 as amended to date, to approve changes.

The cabinet requested president Kagame to approve the nationwide referendum.
The law provides for the government to request for a referendum followed by the president of the Republic’s approval who sets the schedule.

The 2015 revised constitution has 177 articles reduced from 203, involving articles regarding presidential term limits , functioning of the senate, and president of supreme court among others.

Outdated articles were removed from the constitution during the reform.
