Businesses in residential houses re-assured

{The management of Kigali city has reassured business community operating in residential houses whose contracts are not yet expired that they will assess to the contracts and be given some time. }

“We have set a deadline of three months but it doesn’t ignore people who still have on-going tenancy contracts. There are some people we gave three months yet their contracts will end in April 2017. We cannot evict that person,” he said.

“There might even be someone having a five or six months contracts. In this case we will approach him/her to study the case. We can’t apply other alternatives different from agreements he/she has with the house proprietor,” he added.

He warned that those who might temper with contract dates will be punished.

The spokesperson of Private Sector Federation, Nkusi Mukubu Gerard has said that traders were informed of the decision before and no complications will be met along the transition since alternative accommodation is readily available.

“The decision was taken five years ago. But people would wonder where are we leaving for? I think commercial buildings are nowadays available for use, investors have built them,” he said.

Statistics from Kigali city indicate that a total of 968 residential houses are used for businesses.

Among them, Gasabo district has 517, Nyarugenge with 356 and Kicukiro with 95.
