Burundian Rewarded fror Saving 35 During Genocide

Residents of Gahara Sector of Kirehe District donated a cow to a Burundian National; Venant Habarugira who saved lives of 35 Rwandans during 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

The Genocide against ethnic Tutsis claimed over a million lives.

Residents were celebrating Heroes Day on 1st Feb, 2013 in Gahara sector bordering Burundi territory.

Habarugira who was a Burundian Security agent helped Tutsis who were to be killed by Interahamwe militia by taking them to his residential area during war time and repatriated them after the Genocide.

Habiyakare Baritazari who was among the saved ones said Habarugira helped them during the Genocide time.

At the same event, Kirehe District donated 4 cows to residents who have done other charity activities including those ones who helped Genocide orphans.

The Mayor of Kirehe District Protais Murayire told residents to be presented by Heroism qualities adding that you cannot become a hero if you are not a patriot.
