Burundian prize winner to sponsor countrymen refugees

Barankitse Margueritte, a female Burundian who one month ago won the humanitarian international prize Aurora Prize 2016 has said that she will spend the prize money on getting back to school Burundi refugees that fled to Rwanda, enable them get an education for who she’ll be proud seeing some return home as medical doctors, agronomists and engineers.

Barankitse emerged the best among the 180 competitors, winning the prize worth € 1 million for the Aurora Prize 2016. She fought for children’ rights through Maison Shalom organization which helps vulnerable children and access to education.

In a press briefing held on Tuesday att the exhibition of her received award, Barankitse promised that she will use the award to extend support to children.
Today more than 75,000 Burundi refugees are hosted in Rwanda of whom the majority is youth and children.

Barankitse said that some Burundi refugees fled the country after completing secondary schools and lacked means to advance education in universities in exile and so she will support such refugees to access higher education.

Some Burundi refugees in Rwanda have started learning English so they can begin studying with Rwandans at the commencement of 2016/2017 school year.
