Families and business owners in Burera District have been warned against using or employing minors and urged them to front and protect the rights of children.
The message was delivered by different officials during the three-day campaign on child protection that was conducted in all the 17 sectors in Burera and attended by residents, security organs, local leaders, teachers and heads of schools.
Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Phelin Nshimyumukiza noted that child abuse can be committed in families, schools and communities.
“There are varied forms of child abuse which can’t be tolerated especially if a child is in any way denied right to education,” said AIP Nshimyumukiza.
He observed that there are still many cases of school dropouts in the district with some children engaged in domestic chores, despite the government availing the universal education.
“There is no excuse for a child not going to school because they were brought closer to you and for free,” he said.
He went on to warn parents against condemning their children to corporal punishments and hard labour.
He further urged them to always utilize the available free communication lines – 116 for child help line and 3512 for Isange One Stop Centre in case the witness any form of child abuse.
The Child Helpline operates in the Rwanda National Police Call Centre in Kacyiru and has the capacity to receive at least 30 calls simultaneously.
