Burera island residents decry lack of personnel at health post

Burera citizens residing at the isle of Burera in Birwa village of Kinoni sector have expressed disappointment over sailing across the lake for medical care to a health post of which construction activities were completed in 2010 but with no medical personnel one year ago.

Residents of the isle have told TV1 that the journey takes them the whole day to reach Ntaruka health center.

“Our health post has not operated for the whole year over lacking nurses. It requires one to travel a long journey day and night which may affect us negatively,” said one resident.

Uwamahoro Espérance, the director of Ntaruka health center which overlooks management of the health post says that inactivity was caused by two nurses who left the job.

“There has been an issue since two among nine employees of the health post left the job. We plan to bring other replacements where the health post will start working 24 hours 7 days from February 2016,”she said.

The health post was constructed at Burera island in 2010 where 374 household are supposed to access healthcare other than traveling long journeys to Ntaruka health center.
