A total of 40 families from Mazane and 24 others from Sharita islands will be transferred to Batima cell of Rweru sector.

Rwagaju has revealed that the islands have of recent become overpopulated, making it difficult to deliver social services. “The islands have got overwhelmed, complicating access to farmland, education and health services,” he said adding that there’re only primary schools and so relocating them to the new land is meant to facilitate their access to secondary schools, health centers and electricity among others.

Each of the families to be relocated will have a free house worth Rwf 7 million with three bedrooms each, a sitting room, a kitchen and cows’ shelter. The mayor said the relocated families will receive no further compensation since their properties are valued below provided houses.
