Bugesera: Rilima residents convene meeting on security

{Residents of Kimaranzara Cell in Rilima Sector held a security meeting on Wednesday which focused on improving safety in their locality.}

The meeting discussed issues related to individual responsibility in ensuring safety and security, strengthening and supporting Irondo – community patrols – tackling the persistence issue of drug abuse.

The residents further resolved to put much emphasis in crime prevention through real time information sharing with security organs and partnering with local authorities to identify and iron out domestic conflicts that also impact on security of neighbours.

Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Berchmas Kayitare, the Officer-in-Charge of Rilima Police Station, thanked the residents for the “ownership” and pledged continued Rwanda National Police (RNP) support for “effective and rewarding community policing initiatives.”

He noted that preventing a crime is possible where communities join hands to identify and report anything suspicious, which helps security organs to “respond decisively.”

IP Kayitare emphasized the need to address root causes of crime, singling out abuse of illicit drugs as the main source of most crimes like theft, domestic conflicts, gender based violence and child abuse, among others.

He urged them to always inform the police on any challenging and suspicious elements, and report individuals that could be involved in either trafficking, making or consuming drugs so that they are arrested.

“There are two things; you either refrain from any unlawful act like dealing in drugs or be arrested and jailed for going against the law,” he warned.
