Bankers to Promote Professional Competence, Standards

On the evening of December 7th 2012, the Rwanda Bankers’ Association and the National Bank of Rwanda held an end of year Gala Dinner to celebrate the achievements of Rwanda’s banking industry over the past year.

The event was held at the Kigali Serena Hotel with chief guests being the Minister of Finance Min. Rwangombwa, the Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda,Ambassador Gatete, the Vice-Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda Mrs. Nsanzabaganwa, and the Chair of the Rwanda Bankers’ Association Mr. Kayonga.

Other guests included bank executives, stakeholders, partners, and bank employees.

The objectives of the Rwanda Bankers’ Association include promoting standards of professional competence and practice, liaising with the Government of Rwanda on any policies and laws that may impact Rwanda’s banking industry, and to promote education and knowledge of banking in Rwanda.

When asked about what he believes to be the future of Rwanda’s banking sector, Mr. Jack Kayonga who is also the CEO of the Rwanda Development Bank responded that the future of Rwanda’s banking industry is continued growth.

He stated that some challenges include continuing to meet the needs of the clients the banks serve as well as bank stakeholders.

He said that in 2013, the Rwanda Bankers’ Association will spearhead an initiative to train bankers, both new bankers as well as those already working in the industry in order to strengthen the professionalism of banking in Rwanda.

Ambassador Gatete, Governor of the National Bank praised the industry’s achievements, emphasizing that in the first 9 months of 2012, lending has surpassed that of last year’s total.

He also stated that in working together, the National Bank and the Rwanda Bankers’ Association have as one of their major goals to ensure the maturity of Rwanda’s banking systems.

The Bankers’ Gala Dinner featured a live performance from local live band Sound of Hills and Ugandan sensation Isaiah Katumwa, providing a lively evening for all guests.
