Avoid Suicide: Watch Your Neighbours

Suicide is the act of causing one’s own death. It is often committed because of many factors such as despair which may be caused by depression, alcoholism, drug abuse, a result of social issues ranging from poverty, family conflicts, land disputes, incurable diseases among others.

It could also be caused by financial difficulties, poor interpersonal relationships like withdrawal from family and friends, loneliness, unemployment and poor mental health, feelings of hopelessness; feeling no sense of purpose; loss of interest in things one used to care about.

According to statistics, over one million people die by suicide every year worldwide.

Suicide is the 13th leading cause of death. While there might be different causes of suicide in developed and developing countries, the statistics apply to both.

Like in other countries, a number of suicide cases are also reported in Rwanda, though very few.

It affects families of the deceased in one way or another leaving widows and orphans, who most of the time, become vulnerable and easily affected by poverty that may lead to prostitution, school dropouts and delinquency.

Police calls on all people with social, financial or any economical problems to seek advice by approaching local authorities or reporting to the nearest Police station that will assist by directing them to the appropriate people who will help them address the problem instead of using their own ways of solving problems by causing own death.

The public are also called upon to help such families or report such families to local authorities or to police, for further action.
