  • Drinking diet beverages during pregnancy linked to child obesity, study suggests

Children born to women who had gestational diabetes and drank at least one artificially sweetened beverage per day during pregnancy were more likely to be overweight or obese at age 7, compared to children born to women who had gestational diabetes and drank water instead of artificially sweetened beverages, according to a study led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. Childhood obesity is known to increase the risk for certain health problems later in life, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. The study appears online in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

According to the study authors, as the volume of amniotic fluid increases, pregnant women tend to increase their consumption of fluids. To avoid extra calories, many pregnant women replace sugar-sweetened soft drinks and juices with beverages containing artificial sweeteners. Citing prior research implicating artificially sweetened beverages in weight gain, the study authors sought to determine if diet beverage consumption during pregnancy could influence the weight of children.

“Our findings suggest that artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancy are not likely to be any better at reducing the risk for later childhood obesity than sugar-sweetened beverages,” said the study’s senior author, Cuilin Zhang, Ph.D., in the Epidemiology Branch at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). “Not surprisingly, we also observed that children born to women who drank water instead of sweetened beverages were less likely to be obese by age 7.”

The researchers analyzed data collected from 1996 to 2002 by the Danish National Birth Cohort, a long-term study of pregnancies among more than 91,000 women in Denmark. At the 25th week of pregnancy, the women completed a detailed questionnaire on the foods they ate. The study also collected data on the children’s weight at birth and at 7 years old.

In the current study, the NICHD team limited their analysis to data from more than 900 pregnancies that were complicated by gestational diabetes, a type of diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy.

Approximately 9 percent of these women reported consuming at least one artificially sweetened beverage each day. Their children were 60 percent more likely to have a high birth weight, compared to children born to women who never drank sweetened beverages. At age 7, children born to mothers who drank an artificially sweetened beverage daily were nearly twice as likely to be overweight or obese.

Consuming a daily artificially sweetened beverage appeared to offer no advantages over consuming a daily sugar-sweetened beverage. At age 7, children born to both groups were equally likely to be overweight or obese. However, women who substituted water for sweetened beverages reduced their children’s obesity risk at age 7 by 17 percent.

It is not well understood why drinking artificially sweetened beverages compared to drinking water may increase obesity risk. The authors cited an animal study that associated weight gain with changes in the types of bacteria and other microbes in the digestive tract. Another animal study suggested that artificial sweeteners may increase the ability of the intestines to absorb the blood sugar glucose. Other researchers found evidence in rodents that, by stimulating taste receptors, artificial sweeteners desensitized the animals’ digestive tracts, so that they felt less full after they ate and were more likely to overeat.

The authors caution that more research is necessary to confirm and expand on their current findings. Although they could account for many other factors that might influence children’s weight gain, such as breastfeeding, diet and physical activity levels, their study couldn’t definitively prove that maternal artificially sweetened beverage consumption caused the children to gain weight. The authors mention specifically the need for studies that use more contemporary data, given recent upward trends in the consumption of artificially sweetened beverages. They also call for additional investigation on the effects of drinking artificially sweetened beverages among high-risk racial/ethnic groups.

  • 6 things you must stop doing if you want to live a long and healthy life

We all want to live a long and healthy life, but we fail to put into consideration certain things that we ought to do to be strong and healthy.

These are some important things you ought to stop doing if you want to be strong and healthy for a very long time.

    1. Quit having little sleep

Sleep deprivation will cause so many harms to your body. Your immune system is weakened when you sleep little, and it also has a negative effect on your central nervous system, cardiovascular system and digestive system.

    2. Stop being sedentary

A lot of people spend majority of their lives in sedentary positions and they also fail to exercise. Exercising doesn’t mean you must engage in high intensity activities; walking is a good way to exercise. You put your cardiovascular system at risk when you don’t engage in exercising. Heart failures and heart disease are a leading cause of death in most men and women in their 50’s.

    3. Consistent stress

Of course, you must work to make that money, but stress when it’s continuous can cause a lot of harm. Consistent stress weakens your immune system, as well as your central nervous endocrine systems and can also increase the risk of blood pressure and hypertension.

    4. Quit eating processed foods

21st century habits come with 21st century problems. A lot of people now choose to eat processed foods over healthy and natural foods. With processed foods come increased sugar, added sodium, saturates fat and less fibre. In other words, you’re towing the path of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and even cancer.

    5. Quit alcohol and hard drugs

Alcohol consumption is also dangerous to your health and hard drugs is a no go area; they can adversely affect your health in the short-term and long-term as well. Weakened immune system, liver and kidney disease, heart disease, addiction and depression, to name a few, are some harmful effects of alcohol consumption and use of hard drugs.

    6. Smoking

Of course, smoking just has to be on the list, and I’m yet to see the first benefit of cigarette smoking. Research has found that smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in America.

  • 11 things you must quit if you want to be successful

Everyone wants to be successful; I’m yet to see a person who wants to be a failure.

However, it’s not enough to want success; there’s always a price to pay for success. There are some things you must quit if you truly want to be successful.

These are some of those things you must quit to be successful:

    1. Quit trying to achieve goals without a plan

Planning is a huge part of success; every success comes with a laid out plan. Even when the plans fail, you have to keep planning and re-planning. You cannot achieve success without a plan.

    2. Quit thinking you don’t have a choice

You might feel stuck and believe that you don’t have a choice; but there’s always a choice. You only have to look at things with a third eye.

    3. Quit thinking things will pan on its own

Things don’t move on their own except you push them. Thinking things will work out on its own are just a lazy man’s way of thinking. Look at the reason for the problem and spend your time thinking of the solution; that’s how things work.

    4. Quit thinking short term

Short-term goals will only give you short-term results. To move forward in the future, you must think about the future; don’t just expect the future to sort itself out — plan about your long-term future.

    5. Quit giving excuses for failure

There’s always an excuse for failure, and there are always two reactions to failure. The first reaction is to evaluate why you failed, plan on a new outcome and try again, and the second reaction is to justify why you failed to yourself and then everyone. While unsuccessful people go for the latter, successful people choose the former.

    6. Stop looking for quick success

Check the life of every successful person in any given field — one thing they all have in common is patience; patience, perseverance, dreams, vision and hard work are all found in everyone who has genuine success. Stop looking for overnight success; if you want to succeed genuinely, then there should be nothing like overnight success in your dictionary.

    7. Don’t be afraid of the pain

There’s a common theme most gym instructors have — “no pain, no gain”, and this is true in every aspect of life. The pain is where the lessons are, and where the lessons are, is where you’d find success. In other words, the reality of success is wrapped up in the misery of pains; every successful person knows this. Listen to every success story and you’ll observe that there is always a period of pain — this is inevitable.

So don’t be afraid of the pain if you want to be successful.

    8. Quit thinking negatively

I always mention this on this platform, and if you’re a regular reader of Elcrema, you’d know how much emphasis I put on positive thinking. Thinking negatively just puts an end to success; success starts with the mind, and if the mind thinks it’s impossible then you have nailed that dream to the cross. If you can overcome your mind, then you can be anything in this world that you want to be. Your mind is your biggest asset and it’s yet your biggest enemy.

    9. Quit talking and start working

I have a friend who’s so blessed with wonderful ideas. Any time I see him, he has a new idea buzzing in his head, and I’d say to myself “that’s a beautiful idea”. The problem is that he always talks about his ideas and never work on them, and that was when I gave up on him. Anyone who’s ready to talk the talk and not do the work isn’t ready for success.

    10. Quit procrastinating

The time to start is always now; procrastination is an enemy of success. It starts with having a reason to delay and start tomorrow, and then it’ll give you so many reasons why you shouldn’t start at all.

    11. Quit comparing yourself with others

There might be competition in business, but there’s no competition in life. And even in business, there’s still a sky big enough for everyone despite the competition. So stop comparing yourself with others and start building on your path to success.

Are you truly ready for success? Then you must quit these things.

  • South Africa heartbreak as rescued circus lions poisoned

Two lions rescued from circuses in South America and relocated to South Africa have been killed by poachers.

Animal Defenders International (ADI) which helped move 33 lions last year, including José and Liso, says it might offer a reward for information.

The lions’ heads, skins, tails and feet were removed, prompting suspicions that they were killed for ritual purposes.

The crime is currently being investigated by South Africa’s police and anti-poaching units.

ADI head Jan Creamer said she was heartbroken over the killings.

“José and Liso had suffered a terrible life of abuse but their new life in Africa had given them a new lease of life,” the group said in a statement.

José had suffered brain damage from blows to the head in the circus, it said.

The lions had been living at the Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary, inside a 5,000-hectare private farm in the northern Limpopo province.

ADI says it has placed rescued animals in sanctuaries in South Africa for 21 years and this is the first such incident.

  • 6 things every man who wants a beautiful and healthy baby should know

A lot of men tend to think that it’s up to the woman to bring about a healthy and sound baby, but unknown to them, the birth process starts with the man who pours his sperm into the woman.

A man’s sperm health is very important to not only fertilise the egg but also having a healthy baby, and a man must be ready to do the following things.

    1. Sleep and eat well; eat healthy foods and also exercise to ease off stress and tension.

    2. Stay away from toxic chemicals

If you are working in a place where you work with chemicals, you ought to be careful enough to take them away from your members. Toxic chemicals like chemical solvents, lead and heavy metals can increase the percentage of damaged sperm.

    3. Keep your members away from hot surfaces

A man’s testicles are outside of his body and certain exposure to heat and radiation can toil with a man’s testicles, thereby affecting his sperm production. Be wary of hot tubs and steam rooms and also using laptops on the laps.

    4. Reduce caffeine intake

Limiting your caffeine and soda intake is also another thing every man should well be aware of. A study of Danish men found that sperm count and sperm concentration were slightly reduced in men who had high soda and caffeine intake.

    5. Reduce your alcohol intake

Excessive alcohol intake has no benefit, rather it’ll only cause you so much danger. Alcohol has been researched to reduce sperm production and cause sperm abnormalities.

    6. Quit the sticks

If you’re a cigarette smoker, you must resist the urge to smoke and try to quit the sticks. Smoking cigarettes can cause low sperm counts and slow-moving sperm. Heavy drugs like marijuana and cocaine can even lead to miscarriage.

Take care of your body bros, because you have been deposited with the power to bring more people into the earth; it’s called reproduction, and harming your reproductive organ can stop that cycle.

  • RURA nulls NEC unlawful censorship

Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has castigated a decision taken by National Electoral Commission (NEC)to censor presidential candidates’ social media messages and assured citizens of their rights saying NEC has no right to interfere with citizens’ freedom of expression.

“RURA would like to inform the public that in accordance with the ICT Law and Media Law, the National Electoral Commission has no mandate to regulate or interrupt the use of social media by citizens,” reads part of the statement released by RURA.

“RURA as the statutory regulator has not had any discussions with NEC on this subject and would like to reaffirm the right of citizens to express themselves on social media and other ICT platforms, while respecting existing laws,” adds the statement.

The statement is addition the comments of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo who in no uncertain terms expressed thus; “I strongly respect the National Electoral Commission but I disagree with licensing Rwandans on social media messages… majority of Rwandans are mature and law-abiding; the few abusers should face the law, instead of restricting citizens’ views,” she tweeted.

NEC Chairman Prof Kalisa Mbanda announced a plan to censor presidential candidates’ social media messages last week saying the regulations incorporate clauses restricting individual supporters from holding campaigns on social media except when that individual was declared among the team members allowed to campaign for a particular presidential candidate.

He said that a candidate must present the campaign team to NEC prior to the campaigns and members of the team required to submit all social media messages to NEC for censor before sharing with the public.

  • 7 habits you should never exhibit in your workplace

You ought to be the best representation of yourself at your place of work, because people will judge you based on what they see you do.

Whether you know this or not, there’s a subconscious part of every human that tends to notice things around them even when they don’t know it. So, people are noticing you and your reputation is solely based on what they notice.

Now, these are some work habits that should never be found in your workplace:

    1. Arrogance

Having confidence in your ability is a good thing, but try to make yourself feel superior and bring others down is arrogance, and this should never be found in you.

    2. Complaining

Never complain about work; never see your job as a boring, difficult and annoying thing you have to do just to get a paycheck. You’d never grow beyond that point when you have this attitude to work.

    3. Procrastination

Never be known in your workplace as a procrastinator; anything you can do today, do today. Stop pushing work over till the next day.

    4. Being defensive

We all have defense mechanism in us, but more often than not, your defence mechanism is the cause of many terrible habits you indulge in. Learn to take corrections, learn from your mistakes and stop being defensive. You can never improve when you are defensive.

    5. Nonchalance and laziness

If there are two things that’ll kill your reputation at work, it is these two — nonchalance and laziness.

Be dedicated and committed to your work, and you’d always see the result.

    6. Gossip and lies

Try as much as possible to steer clear of office gossips, rumours and lies. These things ruin reputation.

    7. Sleepiness and dullness

Practice good sleep habits during the night, so that you’ll be sharp at work. Sharpness in an employee is every employer’s delight and dullness is one thing every employer detests.

These seven habits will bring you so much harm, and there’s nothing good about them. If you must be the best in your workplace, if you must be known as a man/woman of character in your workplace, then these habits must be far from you.

  • Burundi orders couples to wed amid drive to ‘moralise society’

Cohabiting couples in Burundi have until the end of the year to get married or face legal consequences.

The government order comes after President Pierre Nkurunziza launched a campaign “to moralise society”.

A government spokesman said a crackdown on informal relationships was needed to combat a population explosion.

He said too many schoolgirls were getting pregnant and men were taking advantage of women by cohabiting with several simultaneously.

Burundi has been in crisis since 2015 when Mr Nkurunziza, a born-again Christian, announced he would run for a controversial third term.

    ‘We want order’

Interior ministry spokesman Terence Ntahiraja told AFP news agency that church and state-sanctioned weddings were the solution to the country’s population explosion – and a patriotic duty.

“We want Burundians to understand that everyone is responsible for his life, we want order in this country,” he said.

“All this is done within the framework of the patriotic training programme,” he said, referring to an initiative launched by President Nkurunziza.

It is not clear exactly what sanctions those not tying the knot will face.

However, one farmer quoted by AFP said local officials had already threatened him and his partner with a fine and said any child born out of wedlock would not qualify for free education or medical treatment.

The farmer, named only as Pierre, said he had not married because he could not afford the bride price demanded by his partner’s family.

Hundreds of people have since died since Mr Nkurunziza launched a bid for a third term. But the country had been relatively calm in recent months.
