  • Celebrating the beauty of Afros with the most amazing images

    {Black hair that is kinky, curly, and tightly coiled isn’t widely represented as much as pin-straight locks in beauty campaigns, in fashion magazines, or on the runways. But one woman is on a mission to change that with World Afro Day.}

    World Afro Day founder Michelle De Leon‘s 7-year-old daughter’s love for her hair inspired her to launch a “global celebration” of textured tendrils. “I wanted every Black girl to feel the same and I knew that most didn’t,” De Leon wrote in a post online about the story behind World Afro Day.

    She noted: “I didn’t want children to struggle anymore with thoughts of inferiority and insecurity about their hair. I wanted them to experience the beauty and value of their hair, from the very beginning, not later on in life, like me and like so many other Black women have done.”

    De Leon’s vision has grown into a major event held at the Church House in London, where natural-hair influencers and experts, including Miss USA 2016 Deshauna Barber, celebrity hairstylist and hair care creator Vernon François, and blogger Mary of the Curly Closet engaged, educated, and uplifted attendees through panels, live demos and hair clinics.

    François, who has styled the famous manes of Lupita Nyong’o, Ava Duvernay, and Solange Knowles, shared this video on Instagram of young girls at what he coined the “world’s largest hair education lesson”:

  • Chris Pratt turns up at Justin Bieber’s Hillsong Church

    Newly single star Chris Pratt stepped out Wednesday not for a night of clubbing — please, that’s so cliché — but for a service at Hillsong Church’s L.A. location.

    While the openly religious Guardians of the Galaxy actor is now a box office heavyweight, worshipers at the downtown venue are used to seeing famous faces in the pews. Justin Bieber is such a regular that, in July, he accidentally ran his pickup truck into a paparazzo camped out there to snap a photo of him. In fact, both Bieber and another repeat visitor, Kourtney Kardashian, were in attendance the night Pratt visited. Hailey Baldwin, Vanessa Hudgens, and several of Kourtney’s famous sisters have been spotted at the church, either at its location in L.A. or New York City.

    Hillsong, which now has dozens of locations worldwide, has basically arrived when it comes to the Hollywood set.

    Pratt was casual in jeans and boots for the service he attended, fancy even compared with some of the looks Bieber has worn to Hillsong. While the place of worship doesn’t have a dress code, it does have rock bands belting out Christian songs and people who post to Snapchat and Instagram from inside.

    Even after the accident that occurred while leaving there, Bieber has reportedly turned to the evangelical Hillsong following the sudden cancellation in July of the final 14 dates for his “Purpose” tour. Bieber’s longtime manager, Scooter Braun, said the cancellation was for Bieber’s “soul and well being,” and the Biebs quickly went to Hillsong in the aftermath.

    “He’s been going to church and has been hanging out with his church crew,” a source told People the day Bieber left some fans brokenhearted.

    Bieber is close with Hillsong’s Pastor Carl Lentz, of the NYC location, who baptized the singer in 2014 as he was going through a particularly tough time. Lentz described the experience as “probably one of the most special things I’ve been a part of” to Oprah Winfrey on an October 2016 episode of Super Soul Sunday.

    “He’s serious,” Lentz said. “Look at Justin, he’s a work in progress. He’s never said he’s perfect. He’s never said he is the representation of Christianity, but I’m proud of him for admitting he’s a Christian in the middle of… and knowing he’s gonna have more problems.”

  • Entrepreneurs’ Lifestyle: Freedom comes with responsibility

    {One of the major reasons why entrepreneurs decide to start their own business is the freedom that this lifestyle offers. They want to take their own decisions and are prepared to take the consequences.}

    Entrepreneurs are, by nature, risk takers and know it may culminate into serious or negative results, but they always see the positive and remain forever optimistic. If the decision was the right one, the benefits and results offer a great deal of personal satisfaction and a wonderful sense of achievement.

    If entrepreneurs only realised the extent of the risks that they take on a daily basis, they would probably not take these decisions, or be much more cautious and research the matter to a larger extent before making the call. But, a call needs to be made. Unlike in the corporate environment where a team, commission and task groups of specialist in disciplines debate a solution, running your own business means making decisions by yourself. It may be tough, but it is also great, exciting and satisfying. You make the decisions; the buck stops with you. No reporting. No writing of motivations. Complete freedom to do what your gut tells you.

    However, the freedom also comes with responsibility. The decisions taken will influence the position or situation not only for yourself but also others around you. You have to understand how your decisions will affect you, your business, your staff, your clients and your community at large.

    Entrepreneurs are free to make decisions but are they really free? Not really. You may not have to report to a line manager, but you have other bosses. The most important boss in the life of an entrepreneur is his or her customer. They dictate. If you do not satisfy their needs, you have no business. So they are your bosses. They call the shots. They have options. They have the money in their pockets and as they say, “a customer is the king”. Other bosses are the Government (think of SARS as an example or the laws you need to abide by), your family responsibilities and those who work for you. Your suppliers are also bosses.

    Yes, entrepreneurs are the master of their own destiny. They make the decisions. They have the freedom to do what they want and when. But it comes with a great level of responsibility and like all things in life, freedom comes at a price.

    {The High Education Council (HEC) has said that University of Rwanda’s (UR) decision to restructure and merging of some colleges was not done in tandem with acceptable legal procedures.}

    Restructuring and merging of colleges decision was announced this week and the university management said that they would take effect at the beginning of the new academic year slated to start in October.

    Among reforms made so far are to reduce the number of colleges from six to five and closing different campuses.

    In a letter signed by the Executive Director for HEC, Dr. Emmanuel Muvunyi, HEC said that it has not been informed about changes.

    “This is in reference to the proposed changes in UR’s colleges which were published in media on 11/09/2017. We understand that UR is in the process of restructuring and relocating some of its colleges. These proposed changes have not been submitted to the Higher Education Council (HEC) for review and decision” the letter reads.
    Muvunyi also said that UR breached the law regarding the relocation and closure of high learning institutions.

    “I would like to draw your attention to the Law No01/2017 of 31/01/2017 governing organization and functioning of Higher Education, specifically in its Article 20, regarding the opening, closure or relocation of a college, a school, a faculty or a research institute affiliated to a public, Government-subsidized or private institution of higher learning” he said.

    HEC advises UR to submit the proposed changes to them for review and decision.

    “I take this opportunity to remind you of our discussions on the 29th August 2017 and my letter ref NoED/HEC/260/2017 dated 31 August 2017 regarding other earlier proposed changes in UR’s programmes, which have not yet been submitted to HEC for review and decision” HEC advices UR.

    Speaking to IGIHE on Tuesday, the University of Rwanda’s Deputy Vice-chancellor for Academics and Research Affairs, Professor Nelson Ijumba said that the reforms are aimed at revising the university working conditions and reduce unnecessary expenditures.

    “Reforms started by combining all public universities, but still some colleges had related programmes, like CASS and CBE lecturers used to move from one college to teach in another college, that’s why we put some colleges together,” he said.

  • Pensioners take government to court over benefits

    The case of delivering pension benefits to former Rwandan employees in Burundi has been under negotiation between the two governments since 1997. In 2013, Burundian government released Rwf139 million in pension benefits for compensating all people who served in the government from 1969 to 1994.

    The cabinet meeting of 9th December 2015 decided that the Rwandan pensioners who worked in Burundi should be given their pension. The government of Rwanda accepted to provide benefits for two years.

    However, all pensioners were not satisfied with the government decision saying that it is contradicting their agreements which says that they should be receiving monthly pension benefits.

    The pensioners declined to receive the money until the government accepts to gie them monthly benefits as well. Mariam Gahongayire, a Lawyer representing the government requested court to summon Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), as the institution that advises the government on pension issues.

    Both Pensioners’ lawyer and the judge welcomed the request to invite RSSB in the court and decided to resume the trial on 5th October 2017 with the presence of RSSB.
