  • RWAREB moves to professionalize brokerage services

    The two-year old association currently made up with 79 associations and over 200 members brings together individuals and companies that are involved in brokerage services of selling, renting, managing and provide advice on real estate development and management.

    Speaking to IGIHE, RWAREB chairperson, Alexandre Semarinyota, said that they established the association to formalize and professionalize the sector by removing the negative image that had been created over the years.

    “Our image has been smeared locally yet the services we offer are internationally recognized and respected. We therefore decided to combine efforts so that we earn respect, get more clientele and profit from our job,” he said.

    He said that working in an association will help members contribute to the development of the country through paying taxes and enable transparency in real estate management.

    “We signed agreements with Rwanda Revenue Authority with an aim of supporting government in collecting taxes from the sector players among other services,” he said.

  • Mutuyimana laid to rest

    With much sorrow at Rusororo cemetery, family and football fraternity paid their respects to the late goalkeeper.

    His burial ceremony was preceded by prayers at Regina Pacis Remera

    Rayon Sport president, Chance Denis Gacinya promised continued support to the family of Mutuyimana. He said that every 12nd September, they will always organise his remembrance game and the money from the game will go to support his family especially in paying school fees for his son.

    Mutuyimana was born in 1988 and died on 12nd September.

    He played for Kiyovu Sport and Police FC before he went to Sofapaka in Kenya where he left in 2016 joining Rayon Sports. He played for Rayon Sport s for one year.

  • Refugee camps to use cooking gas

    The pilot phase has been conducted in Nyarushishi and Kijote refugee camps in Nyabihu District. The opening ceremony took place in Nyarushishi camp in Nkungu Sector of Rusizi district on Friday.

    Speaking at the event, the Minister for Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs , Jeanne d’Arc Debonheur said that beside environment conservation, the exercise will reduce money spent on buying firewood and invest it in other development activities.

    “It was observed that we used to spend much money in buying firewood, affecting other development activities. It also affects our forest cover, breeding erosion and other disasters which leave lives and environment susceptible to destruction,” she said.

    She said it has been taking Rwf900 million every year to buy firewood, but now it will take a half of the budget and the rest will go in development activities.

  • Two sector executive secretaries in Nyamagabe resign

    {Two sector executive secretaries, Jean Claude Kabanda, the executive secretary for Kaduha sector and Jean de Dieu Kanyarubungo for Musebeya sector have submitted their resignation letters to the Nyamagabe District executive committee.}

    Speaking to IGIHE, the Executive Secretary for Nyamagabe District, Emmanuel Twayituriki said that they received both resignations on Friday 15th September 2017.
    “We received their resignation letters citing personal reasons. The executive committee will decide on their resignations,” he said.

    Twayituriki said that both officials had neither bad performance records nor cases any other tangible problem that would inform their resignation.

    He said that by the beginning of this week the district committee will have decided on the next course of action so that residents continue with accessing good and fast services.

  • Husband suspected in strangling Pastor Mutesi to death, under police custody

    Speaking to IGIHE, the Rwanda National Police Spokesperson, ACP Theos Badege, said that post-mortem results indicate that lacking oxygen circulation to all parts of the body including the brain and lungs led to the pastor’s demise. Badege said that they suspect her husband, Drake Mugisha, to have been involved in the murder. He, Mugisha, was on Saturday arrested to help police with investigations.

    “We have based our actions of arresting the suspect on doctors’ post-mortem report, information of perpetual home violence and circumstances of volatility in the night and the morning she died,” said Badege.

    Badege urged the public to avoid any form of domestic violence but always consult with local leaders and police in time to amicably resolve any emerging conflicts. Pastor Mutesi has been the head of Gates of Heaven Ministry based at Muhima, a Kigali suburb.

  • UN decorates 430 Rwandan Police peacekeepers in CAR

    The decorated officers, who include 58 females, constitute three contingents; two Rwanda Formed Police Units (FPUs) and a Protection and Support Unit PSU, each composed of 140 police officers. Others serve as Individual Police Officers (IPOs), and act as advisors and mentors.

    Whereas FPU specializes in public order management like crowd control, facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance, escort duties and protection of UN facilities; PSU undertakes special duties such as protection for VIPs among others.

    The medal parade ceremony held on September 15 in the capital Bangui, and presided over by the Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary General in charge of Humanitarian Affairs in MINUSCA, Najat Rochdi.

    While speaking about the importance of the “exemplary service and work” done by the decorated officers for the people of CAR, Rochdi noted that the service medal signifies “respect and admiration for accomplishments made to bringing peace and safety in Central African Republic.”

    She commended the “high level of discipline and good conduct exhibited by Rwanda National police contingents”, a conduct she said should “inspire peacekeepers all over the world.”

    “You have done your work with diligence and courage to protect civilian under threat of death in the Central African war-torn society,” she said.

    She recognized the “outstanding quality of Rwandan leadership and Rwanda National Police in particular that inspires Rwandan police peacekeepers all over the world.”
    Rochdi also paid tribute to RNP and the country in general for upholding “zero tolerance” policy to indiscipline such as sexual exploitation and abuse.

  • AFFK 20th edition pays tribute to Rwandan Culture in Khouribga

    This year, the festival, traditionally sponsored by OCP Group, is celebrating its 40th anniversary and paying tribute to a Rwandan film by name of “The Belgian , in order to strengthen cooperation links between Moroccan and Rwandan film industry and to open up opportunities for discussion between Rwandan filmmakers and their Moroccan counterparts.

    The festival that started on 9th of this month will end on 16th. Its main purpose is to promote African cinema and cultural promotion.

    This year, the festival pays tribute to Rwandan culture through the performance of Rwandan artistes like Jules Sentore and more Rwandan film stars.

    Among others invitees that are showcasing the Rwandan culture in the festival is the book writer Mukasonga Scholastique who wrote ‘Notre Dame du Nil’.

    Through her works; Mukasonga showcased the soul of Rwanda by depicting hearts of men and women rooted in a land with a history and a culture full of tragedy and heroism. It is through her raw retelling that she paints a hopeful renaissance of a more serene future.

    “Most of my books are dedicated to the memory of the genocide. It is a duty to remember so that the victims do not fall into oblivion, “said the novelist during a conference held in the festival.

    Competitors are from Senegal, Mozambique, Ghana, Banin, Mali, Algerie, Soth Africa, Burkina Fasso, Togo, Uganda, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt and Rwanda.

  • UTB constructing Rwf10 billion Rebero premises

    {The University of Technology and Business Studies (UTB) has said that it is to embark on construction of a Rwf10 billion campus equipped with sufficient facilities equipment that will see students acquire theory and practical skills in their areas of specialization.

    The university management announced the move on Friday during a press conference.

    According to the management, UTB will have moved in its Rebero, Kicukiro district premises by the end of 2018.
    The UTB Vice Chancellor, Dr Callixte Kabera said that construction activities are set to start this year and end by next year.

    “Construction activities will start in October and we expect that we will have shifted to the Rebero premises by the end of 2018. Rebero campus will be well equipped,” he said.

    The second phase will be to construct hostels which will accommodate 400 students for students from Rwanda and the region; a cultural village and community tourism center which will be for showcasing handicrafts, entertainment and cultural heritage to the tourists.

    The University complex will also have shopping and services center as well as a modern gymnasium that will harbor a variety of sports facilities.

    Since its inauguration in 2008, UTB has well developed and contributed to the socio-economic development of the country.
    A total of 3000 have graduated from the university with 95% of them gainfully employed.

    “Our former students are leading employees and managers in top hotels in the country. Others are working in neighboring countries and others are self-employed. This is an indicator of how important our courses are,” he said.
    UTB also offers 30 scholarships per year to needy students, most of who are orphans, or children of ex-combatants and exceptionally talented students through the Zulfat Foundation, under the auspices of Madam Zulfat Mukarubega, President and Founder of UTB.

    UTB started with 445 students in 2008 and the number has since grown to about 5000 students now at both Kigali and Rubavu campuses.

  • Western Province recognized for surpassing revenue targets

    {Western Province has been recognized for surpassing the targeted tax revenues in the year 2016/2017 by earning Rwf21.4 billion way above the targeted Rwf17.9 billion.

    All best taxpayers were recognized on Wednesday during the 2017 Taxpayers’ Appreciation Day that took place in Rubavu.

    Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) and the Finance Ministry recognized taxpayers by providing them with awards and asked them to continue to support national development through tax compliance.

    RRA commissioner general Richard Tusabe thanked taxpayers in Western Province for being compliant.

    Finance Minister, Claver Gatete also thanked taxpayers for changing their mindsets towards tax payment.

    “Taxpayers have really become more compliant and this will positively impact national development through improved infrastructures and other big projects. These are good result from your taxes,” he said.

    Western Province Governor, Alphonse Munyentwali called upon continued compliance and contribution towards nation building.

    “These achievements were gained because of concerted citizen participation,” he said, adding that they will continue mobilizing more people to understand the role of taxes in national development.

  • Google Launches Massive Digital History, Culture And Arts Project For Hispanic Heritage Month

    {Leave it to Google to think big. The internet giant partnered with 50 organizations across the country to create the largest digital collection of U.S. Latino art, culture and history ever curated online.}

    The project, intended to preserve and share stories and exhibits related to Latino history in the United States, went live today – just days before the official start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15.

    “The Google Arts & Culture: Latino Cultures in the US collection is a labor of love for many Googlers and partner institutions. It was a project that was more than a year in the making and took an small army to help digitize the 2,500 new artworks and curate 69 new exhibits,” says Jesús García, Head of Hispanic Communications, Google & YouTube.

    The digital exhibit has over 4,300 archives and artworks – including Diego Rivera murals – related to the Latino experience in the U.S., multimedia exhibits in English and Spanish and virtual tours of historic sites, as well as profiles of key Latino figures, such as Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

    The massive collection aims to show the cultural contributions and impact of Latinos in the United States going all the way back to the 1500’s. The site will become a permanent online fixture.

    Rita Moreno is among the actors who talk about Latino stereotypes in Hollywood.

    A section dedicated to Latinos in news and entertainment features photos and interviews with iconic actors such as Héctor Elizondo, Rita Moreno, Edward James Olmos and the late Ricardo Montalbán talking about stereotypical portrayals of Latinos in Hollywood, how they were typecast and how they dealt with those challenges, which continue to be an issue today.
