{The Ministry of Refugees and Disaster Management (MIDIMAR) has revealed that rains that started in April 2016 took lives of 54 people across the country leaving 36 injured.}
This was revealed yesterday by Philippe Habinshuti, the Director of Disaster Management and Program Coordinator at MIDMAR during in a talk show aired at Rwanda Television.
He said that apart from deaths, 847 houses and 38 classrooms destroyed, while more than 500 hectares of land were ravaged. Some roads and bridges were also destroyed.
He explained that affected families received basic support.
“We have condoled bereaved families, we have sought provisional accommodation for people whose houses were destroyed waiting for renovation of their houses or relocation. We have also provided basic materials including bedding, hygiene materials and cooking fuel in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Ressources,” he said.
Habinshuti said that people affected most in Northern Province are those living in volcanic region where, he said, heavy runoff have increased in the past two years and ravaged built water canals. Habinshuti added that stakeholders have started devising best possible ways of the matter.
Last year disasters destroyed properties worth Rwf 5,800,000,000.
