Anti-GBV campaign goes to Kirehe Disrict

{Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on residents of Kirehe District to partners in the fight against gender-based-violence (GBV) by being proactive in their communities to discourage the scourge.}

The message was delivered on February 20 during a meeting that brought together over 150 residents of Kigarama Sector.

Speaking during the meeting, the District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Gahigi Harerimana, told residents that there is no place for GBV in any society that seeks sustainable development, security, peace and harmony, and called on residents to be the “eyes and ears” of their neighborhoods against GBV.

“We all have a duty to ensure that women and children who bear the brunt of gender violence acts are given justice and care, and that that the perpetrators are punished, to serve as a lesson to others,” he said.

“Violence against women and child abuse obstruct economic development, threatens peace and prosperity, and slows full participation in family and community affairs. We all need to support each other in ensuring that every family lives in harmony.”

Harerimana told residents that on top of partnering with law enforcers to overcome GBV, “You should also look for opportunities in your community that enable you to participate in advancing equality. It is through such opportunities that you get chances to promote gender equality, as well as meet others and share best practices, and lay strategies to overcome any emerging challenges.

During the meeting, police also reunited the families of Hassan Munyakayanza and his spouse Christine Nyirasafari as well as that of Elie Kayitare and Denise Izagiriza that had for long been marred with wrangles and violence.
