Another Drug Dealer Arrested

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has arrested a man suspected to be among the suppliers of drugs in the country.

Sohaib Nkweno, a resident of Cyanzarwe sector in Rubavu Distict was arrested after he was found with over 1500 rolls of cannabis.

He was at the time traveling in a public vehicle to Kigali from Rubavu. He was identified by passengers, who later informed police that led to his arrest as he arrived in Nyabugogo in Nyarugenge District.

He is held at Muhima Police Station.

In related development police seized 162 liters of local brew called Kanyanga in Gicumbi and Burera districts.

The Central Region Police Spokesperson, Albert N. Gakara urged Rwandans who engage in such activities to find other alternatives of making a living.

“Police will not tolerate any person who is involved in such criminal acts,” he warned.

He urged transporters to work with police in order to fight the transportation on the drugs, especially from neighboring countries using public vehicles.

He emphasised on the need forthe public to share timely information with security organs and continues reporting all these drug dealers.

“Rwanda National Police is trying to locate and cut all supply routes and it is in this regard that the public is being urged to work together with Police to eliminate drug dealing and consumption which hinders economic development.”

In article 594 of the penal code states that any person, who consumes, injects, inhales, anoints him/herself with or makes any other unlawful use of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of one to three years and a fine of Rwf50, 000 to Rwf500, 000.

It also states that any person who unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.

It adds that “any person who unlawfully makes, transforms, imports or sells narcotic drugs, and psychotropic substances within the countr, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.”
