{The Rwandan ambassador in Uganda, Frank Mugambage said that the government of Rwanda has not yet received official cases of Rwandans unlawfully owning Uganda identity cards.}
He has revealed this following the request of Uganda’s minister of internal security, Rose Akol, who asked Rwandans having both identity cards of Uganda and Rwanda to hand them to the government since it is against Uganda’s laws.
Akol requested Rwandans to submit Uganda identity cards as she inspected Mirama-Kagitumba border in Ntungamo district where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Paul Kagame will visit April 23rd, 2016.
In a press briefing held yesterday in Kampala, the Rwandan ambassador to Uganda said “We have not yet registered any case. We only read such information in newspapers. If someone has two nationalities, it doesn’t harm our laws since the government of Rwanda allows people to belong to two nationalities, “he said.
Ambassador Mugambage said that the two countries have good bilateral cooperation adding that such matters can be addressed amicably.
“I am saying this since many Rwandans may have worries wondering what is happening. Emigration and immigration offices at both countries work together to address such matters that may arise,” he said.
He explained that it is a personal choice since a Rwandan can’t be prohibited to own two nationalities.
The constitution of Uganda promulgate in 1995, Rwandans are considered as one of the 56 indigenous communities accepted in Uganda.
Media in Uganda report that opposition parties raised complaints saying that during the recent elections held in February, 2016 the government gave identity cards to Rwandans to vote for president Museveni. The rumours have been dismissed by the ruling party.
