All Set for Sim Card Registration–RURA

{{The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) has said all activities regarding SIM card registration are well planned and ready to start.}}

Registration processes will officially start February 4th, 2013 and expected to end on July 31st, 2013.

Meanwhile in Kenya, over 1.28million sim cards that were not registered have been blocked. The registration Excersises in ongoing in Uganda.

Jean Baptiste Mutabazi in Charge of Communication and Media at RURA told IGIHE that the institution has started to carry out awareness campaigns to enable the public understand and fully participate in the exercise.

The registration will be free of charge.

He urged telecommunication companies to use Mobile SMS to remind their subscribers about the exercise.

Due to recent developments of mobile applications such as mobile money, and other transactions made using cell phones, many countries across the world have embarked on registering mobile customers to establish a link between the SIM card and identification details of its holder.

Currently Kenya has finished registering Mobile users and about 1.2 Millions of SIM Cards were deactivated due to the failure to register them.

Rwanda is the only remaining member of the East African Community that had not started the process of SIM card registration.
