{{Airtel Rwanda yesterday sponsored a regional telecom breakfast meeting hosted by the Ministry of Youth and ICT of Rwanda, for the One Network Area project of the northern corridor infrastructure.}}
The breakfast meeting held at the Mille Collines Hotel in Kigali gathered regional telecom operators, regulators and ICT Ministers and other senior officials of the four Northern Corridor countries including Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan.
The meeting highlighted among others, ways in which communication stakeholders in all the four countries can work together to harmonize calling rates and create seamless customer experience.
Opening the meeting, Hon. Claver Gatete, Minister of Finance and Planning of Rwanda, highlighted the role of telecoms in fast tracking regional integration. He said, “Telecoms play a big role in this milestone of regional integration. We therefore must work with them to realize the One Area Network Project.”
Airtel Rwanda Managing Director, Mr. Teddy Bhullar in his remarks underlined Airtel’s support for the initiative saying, “Airtel right from the top leadership is at the forefront of this initiative and this is evidenced by our own ‘One Network’ across all our 17 operations including the East African block. Our customers across Africa and the region are already enjoying free incoming calls and local recharges.
The Minister of Youth and ICT of Rwanda, Hon. Jean Philbert Nsengimana called on regional telecom operators and government to work together towards the reality of seamless roaming in the Northern Corridor. He hailed Airtel for spearheading the initiative so far.
Hon. John Nasasira, the Uganda’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology in his remarks highlighted the key role played by telecom operators across the region in realizing this project. “It is important that our regional telecom operators work together to make this communication milestone a reality”.
Hon. Dr. Fred Matiang’i, the Cabinet Secretary, Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology called on the Telecom Industry to come together and establish a permanent platform that will be leveraged for proactively engaging with Ministries of ICT on matters pertaining to the growth of the telecom Industry.
