The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Claver Gatete has called for more skilled people to engage in Agriculture sector.
Gatete noted during an official visit at the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources.
The purpose of the visit was to get a comprehensive view of the entire agriculture sector as the sector covers the whole territory and impacts other key sectors.
The Permanent Secretary in MINAGRI, Ernest Ruzindaza explained that Rwanda has been among the first countries that have applied fertilizers, and food balance shows growth of national stock strategy, 6 fold compared to two years ago.
“Since 2007, food insecurity has been a major challenge in the country. With the Crop Intensification Program, the agriculture sector has grown 12%.”
He presented the status of livestock in which Girinka Program has improved peoples livelihood.
The distribution target of all the cows in the program will be 350,000 cattle by 2017.
Since the program started in 2006, about 144,000 cows have been distributed to poor families.
