Africa Should Play an Active Role in War Against Terrorism

Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Louise Mushikiwabo has called on Africa to work together and take timely actions to address the global challenge of terrorism.

Minister Mushikiwabo said this while attending an Extraordinary Summit of the African Union Peace and Security Council in Nairobi, Kenya today where she represented President Paul Kagame.

“Africa cannot and should not seat back and fold arms when our much cherished developmental aspirations and will of our people to shape their destiny is ravaged by terrorists who go on rampage killing innocent civilians, maiming, kidnaping, raping, destroying anything in their path,” she said.

Minister Mushikiwabo further reminded the meeting that the footprints of many of the terrorist groups, including FDLR that has threatened Rwanda while causing instability in the region, their operational tempo, ideological underpinnings and alliances are on the increase and getting more sophisticated. She emphasised that working together in solidarity as African countries was key in fighting against terrorism.

The Nairobi Summit results from a decision taken by the AU Summit held in Malabo in June this year to convene a Special Summit on Terrorism in Nairobi following increasing threats of terrorism across the continent in particular terrorist attacks on Kenya.

The summit was attended by Heads of state and Government from Chad, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Tanzania, Nigeria, Niger, representatives of Heads of State as well as African partners.
