The Commissioner for Inspectorate of Services and Ethics at Rwanda National Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jean Nepo Mbonyumuvunyi has urged entrepreneurs and members of the private sector to refrain and fight tendencies of corruption and be part of crime prevention drive.
He made the remarks recently while meeting over 400 representatives of the private sector in Gasabo District.
He informed the business community to enhance their efforts in reporting anyone who may attempt to give or solicit a bribe.
“Like other crimes, corruption is an offense that has a strong negative effect to the economy and welfare of a nation,” ACP Mbonyumuvunyi said.
“As business people, you are expected to conduct your business lawfully and report those who attempt to solicit bribes or extra money or material from you as a prerequisite to be given a service,” he informed the entrepreneurs.
He warned that “there is a high price to pay for corruption.”
“The law is very strict against anyone involved in graft. Both imprisonment and fines apply and this can as well cause gross losses to your business.”
He, however, noted that although Rwanda is among the countries where corruption is very low, even one case has its impact and can’t be tolerated.
In detailing RNP’s quest against corruption, ACP Mbonyumuvunyi said the force has put in place several mechanisms to address the vice, among which include the Anti-corruption and public embezzlement Unit, the Inspectorate of Services and Ethics department and Police Disciplinary Unit.
He hailed the partnership with several stakeholders in fighting corruption but noted that the role of the private sector in fighting graft is yet to be realised in this campaign.
