{Health officials in Nyamasheke district have revealed that a total of 2,934 children have been cured of malnutrition-related diseases as their parents were tipped on overcoming such illnesses.}
The achievement is said tohave been attained through tipping residents on preparing balanced diet, mobilizing them to build kitchen gardens, offering small domestic animals to some vulnerable families with children affected by malnutrition-related diseases.
“When we started receiving funding we had 927 children and were all healed. The next year we got 1026 sick children cured while 87% of 1127 children with malnutrition related diseases were healed this year,” said Bankundiye Etienne Nyamasheke district official in charge of health affairs.
The project was supported by World Vision in collaboration with on Netherlands embassy to Rwanda through projects aimed at reducing malnutrition and stunted growth of children less than 2 years within three years.
The project was piloted in Nyamasheke and Gicumbi districts.
Mukabutera Christine, the Coordinator of EKN project aimed at combating malnutrition in World Vision has said that they spent USD 1 million to reach the objective of helping 15,000 children, parents with breast-feeding children and pregnant mothers from Nyamasheke district to overcome malnutrition.
The 2015 Sun Alliance research carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Health indicated that the rate of malnutrition in Nyamasheke stood at 34,0%, the lowest compared to others in Western Province.
