The Frw4Billion center will be constructed at the National Police Headquarters in Kacyiru
Mr. Ban hailed Rwanda for being selected to host the center. He also praised government’s strong commitment to preventing and combating violence against women and children; “I thank President Kagame and his leadership and Rwanda’s security organs for considering putting an end to violence against women as a priority.”
Rwanda’s Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Oda Gasinzigwa thanked Africa for entrusting Rwanda with hosting the center: “It will enhance Africa continent efforts in addressing Gender based violence. Training, advocacy, information sharing, networking and best practices sharing in order to end gender based violence on the continent.”
The Inspector General of Police Emmanuel .K. Gasana said Rwanda will continue with the fight against GBV by involving communities in prevention and response to violence against women and girls. “We have stepped up awareness campaigns and support systems and established gender desks and GBV clubs and establishment of community policing committees countrywide.”
UNiTE to End Violence Against women Campaign was launched in 2008 by the United Nations Secretary-General with the aim of raising public awareness and increasing political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world.
Mr.Ban and the World Bank president Dr. Yong Kim also visited Kigali memorial site at Gisozi where they honoured victims of the 1994 Genocide against ethnic Tutsis which claimed over a million lives. The UN chief also provided 10,000 USD to help with works at the memorial site.
Meanwhile, the World Bank president Dr. Kim congratulated President Paul Kagame & Jeannette Kagame for their tireless efforts in preventing gender based violence in Rwanda.
Mr. Kim also commended Rwanda’s Isange One stop center saying ,”I have never seen such a great example as the Isange One Stop Center in Rwanda in the fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV) .”
The center provides free services for survivors of child domestic abuse and gender-based violence (GBV). It also operates a free telephone hotline for help, protection from further violence, investigation of crimes, medical and psycho-social care as well as support and collection of forensic evidence.
Mr. Kim further commended President Kagame for economic growth and decreasing inequality. Incredible example of finding new life between victims & perpetrators.
