Local Defence Urged to Tighten Safety Measures

{{Quality and improved service delivery of Local Defence personnel at the grass root, in the campaign against crimes, facilitates Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other security organs to deal with any security threats in the country, the Deputy Inspector of Police (DIGP) Stanley Nsabimana said Tuesday.}}

DIGP Nsabimana was speaking at the opening of half-day workshop of District Local Defence Commanders held at the police headquarters in Kacyiru.

“You equally play a vital role in fight crimes and ensuring security, especially at the village and cell levels. Refresh your minds, strengthen your operations and embrace the tradition of timely exchange of information so as to jointly stand up for the good of our country,” he stated.

He appealed to them to extend the skills and knowledge acquired to their colleagues, to further execute their duties effectively, jointly.

The workshop organized by Rwanda National Police aims at reminding the local defence personnel of their responsibilities, draw new lines to fight and prevent crimes and enhance exchange of information and partnership with Rwanda National Police and other security organs and local authorities.

Mr. Fred Mufuruki, the Director General in the Ministry of Local Government, reminded participants to be agents of mindset, good governance and unity among Rwandans, be exemplary and follow the rule of law in their duties.

Currently, there are more than 14, 260 local defence personnel in the country.

Samuel Nsanzintwari, the local defence commander of Rubavu District, however, requested for periodic training to gain more skills and knowledge, and to extend the same courses to all local defence staff.

“We are in touch with police in our places of operation, and what should have been a challenge to us, police is always there to guide and help us; but again, there’s a lot to learn and understand, which requires more period courses,” Nsanzintwari noted.

Nsanzinwari outlined liquor and narcotics as most things intercepted in Rubavu District, most of which, he added, is brought into the country from neighbouring countries through illegal channels.
