This was revealed yesterday during a 3rd national forum of people with disability.
The forum theme is “Remove barriers and achieve zero new HIV infections by 2015: PWDs included”.
More than one billion people or 15% of the World’s Population, have a disability (WHO, 2012).
In Rwanda 522,856 people have disability and 51% of them are women.
In 2005 a pilot project carried out in 2 districts revealed that the HIV prevalence among PWDs was slightly high standing at 4% which surpass the prevalence of the general population currently stands at 3%.
Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Acting DDG at Rwanda Bio Medical Center said that the prevalence among the PWDs is alarming adding that there should be specific services to help them achieve zero new infections and Zero stigma by 2015.
