Rwanda Targets 563 Mega Watts in EDPRS2

{{In line with the 2nd Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS2), Rwanda has set a minimum target of increasing energy to 563 MW by 2017.}}

This was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure; Prof. Silas Lwakabamba saying that by June, 2013 about 80 MW will be added to the national grid.

Prof. Lwakabamba said the problem of Electricity has been extensively discussed during 10th National Leadership retreat and it was decided that Private sector should take an active role in generating additional source of Energy.

He noted that Rwanda is dealing with geothermal energy, solar and hydro-power among others, however, added the Minister, the demand for electricity is higher than the supply.

Lwakabamba said that currently there are ongoing projects which will contribute additional Megawatts to the existing capacity.

He mentioned Kivuwatt which is expected to generate 100MW adding that by end of this year Rwanda will have 25MW from Kivuwatt.

Other Micro-hydropower includes Nyabarongo Power plant which will generate about 28 MW, Rusizi II (48MW) as well as Methane Gas which is expected to generate 150 MW.
