Supreme Court Warns Amnesty International on Ingabire case

The Rwanda Supreme Court has warned Amnesty International against making comments that could influence decisions to be made by Judge in the appeal case of Victoire Ingabire.

Amnesty International had claimed the conviction of Ingabire Victoire Umuhoza by the Rwanda High Court, was not consistent with international standards and that thus, the Supreme Court must correct remarkable errors in the judgment.

The Supreme Court found such comments, misleading and detrimental to the independence of the judge.

Amnesty International should wait for the analysis of the Appeal Judge rather than giving order to reform the judgment of the High Court, before the unfolding debate.

Kaliwabo Charles, Spokesperson of the Judiciary said, in attempting to defend international standards for a fair trial, Amnesty International has violated one of the most fundamental, namely, “Avoid words likely to influence the judge’s decision.”
