2 Arrested Over Cannabis Deals

Police in Rusizi district is holding two men for allegedly dealing in Cannabis trading business.

The suspects namely Jean Bosco Nayirwanda and Gratien Ntibizigirwa together with their two teenagers were found in possession of about 50kgs of cannabis in Nyamihanda cell, Butare sector in Rusizi district over the weekend.

According to Police in Rusizi, the pair was arrested in Nyungwe forest by game rangers and found them in possession of the illegal drug.

Police investigations also indicate that, the two suspects had close working relations with Daniel Nzeyimana, a Burundian renowned businessman in Kayanza region who is believed to have had a hand in the illegal business.

The suspects with their exhibits are held at Kamembe Police station.

This is not the first time Police has arrested narcotic dealers in the district. Last month, another person was apprehended in possession with six kilograms of cannabis.

Superintendent Urbain Mwiseneza, the Western Region Spokesperson appeals to residents particularly those residing near the border to share timely information with the Police so such criminals are arrested.

“Drugs, including marijuana sneak into the country from neighboring countries,” said Mwiseneza calling for continued partnership to ensure drug dealing and consumption is fought.

He asked residents especially the youth to shun usage of such drugs. “Drugs would never do you any good apart from bringing you a couple of life troubles including lung cancer, Tuberculosis and many others,” warned Supt Mwiseneza.

If convicted the duo will be confined between one to three years and pay a fine between Rwf 50,000 and Rwf 500,000 as stipulated by article 594 of the Rwandan penal code.
