Police Arrests 2 for Smuggling Fertilizers

Police has arrested two people in Burera District in connection with smuggling about five tones of fertilizers.

The suspects, Galvalic Niyitegeka, 21 and Samuel Ngendahimana 21, were arrested recently trying to smuggle the fertilizers to Uganda where it is reported, they had a potential buyer.

The duo, however, said the fertilizers belong to one Emmanuel Gatera, commonly known as Kibonge, a businessman in Rubavu District and that, they were just drivers transporting it to Uganda.

Gatera is still at large.

Northern Region Police spokesperson, Superintendent Francis Gahima, said there are other people who were arrested in the recent past in Musanze and Burera trying to smuggle fertilizers to neighbouring countries.

“Fertilizers are meant to help local farmers increase farm production and thus improve their standards of living but not for private interests”, Gahima noted.

He said such arrests should be a warning to whoever is involved in such illegal businesses.
